    Tipping

.....awe dang. And I thought 20% was a lot already!!! I mean, I know I don't have to pay if I wasn't satisfied, but wow, 30%? As I mentioned there were cases where I did not leave any tips because I was not happy with the service I received ( in other cases I have tipped pretty darn generously), and I've even gotten into a bit of an "argument" with my friend eating with me because of that. He'd say stuff like "I know you weren't happy and he wasn't the best waiter, but he needs to make a living, so let's leave a tip..." and I'll tell him that he's being too nice, he'll say stuff like "You're Japanese, your service standards are way too high" and I'll say "That darn waiter didn't even smile or say hi, that's got nothing to do with standard!" etc etc etc. Tips are fine. Just let US decide the amount. I know I know, when you're in Rome, do what the Romans do. I complain a lot ( and I mean a LOT) about tips...but in the end though, I do still tip 99% of the time.

    Tipping

In Japan, tips don't exist. I'll be honest, I hate tipping. From a Japanese POV, we pay for the food, and that's it. I know that people will say "if the service is good we should tip," but in Japan that makes no sense because as a customer you are SUPPOSED to get decent service anyway. Sorry if we sound mean, but that's just the way it is. It's not that we treat waitresses etc like trash or anything, it's something that simply does not exist. One time a friend of mine asked me: "So at table A, a customer orders a cake and coffee. At table B, another guy orders a glass of wine and steak. Same number of items, only the guy at table B orders more expensive stuff. But again, the number of items that were ordered were the same, yet the tip at table B will be higher because the food was expensive. This makes no sense, it's the same number of items, same amount of work. (OK, maybe the steak plate might be heavier than the cake) Why do I need to tip more for the wine/steak?" Just to be clear, my friend is not stingy. He just wants an explanation that makes sense. The whole "waiters need them" is not enough for him, because from what he sees, he is paying extra already, and the waiter should be happy for getting 3 dollars extra. Again, I see his point. Plus Japan is crazy when it comes to service, a lot of people have very high standards when it comes to service. Again, not trying to make my people sound mean and stingy, but in their minds they are thinking "We paid, you want us to pay more?? WHY!!?? It's not like your service was overly impressive or anything. OK, here's 3 dollars. WHAT!!?? That's not enough!?? DANG you have some nerve to ask for even more when we already paid!!!" In case you guys are wondering, even though I hate tipping, I do tip. UNLESS the service sucks. One time this guy at a restaurant clearly ignored me and my friend at California Pizza Kitchen, and we didn't leave anything behind for that dude. Japan is sloooooowly starting to realize that this tipping thingy exists outside the country, but most people still are not aware of it. If a Japanese tourist doesn't leave a tip, chances are they simply didn't know.
  3. Oh please, no worries, I didn't think so. Even if you did, I won't mind because I can clearly see how some people would see it as "making fun," but again I kinda-sorta assumed you weren't talking about me 😉 Besides, after all l I was making fun of that guy who sent me that strange spam message!
  4. I clearly remember a post where I questioned a guy who was offering writing gigs who clearly lacked English skills, even though he claimed to be an English teacher. There was a LOT of going back that went on, and that post eventually got deleted. BTW, he happened to be from the region in question. It didn't really matter where he was from, it was him offering a gig when he sadly was not qualified even thought it seemed like he really believed he was capable of it. I can see why he felt insulted, but there was no hate there, at least that was not my intention. In another post I posted a screen shot of a strange spam message I got, and yes, the English was quite bad but it wasn't the English, it was the contents of the message. Was I making fun of that person who sent me the message? You betcha, because it was so ridiculous. That post has not been deleted though...
  5. A little something I'd like to add to this one, and this is based on my personal experience. "I can get it cheaper elsewhere." Great then, please go ask that seller. "But I want YOU to do it, you have better reviews." Then freakin' pay the full amount. "I'll give you more projects in the future if you give me a discount." There is NO guarantee that you will, so again you need to pay the full amount. Like Smash said in #7 though, IF I end up working with the same buyer for a long time, there is a chance the seller will reduce the price. Just don't expect the seller to do so from the very start, and don't dangle that "I'll give you more work" thingy in front of the sellers' faces. It's annoying.
  6. I guess sadly some get offended easily than others and cannot tell the difference between badmouthing/bullying and feedback/constructive criticism. 😅
  7. I tried using the flagging system and clearly it didn't work so I used the ticket too. I sent them screen shots, even the file with the terrible machine-translation which was given to me by the seller who ended up with that garbage. One CS staff told me that "due to the dramatic increase of new members from last year we are being slow with taking action etc..." but I sent multiple proof AND waited 5 months, so I guess for them it was too much trouble to actually open the file and have someone check it. If it was a copied image or description, it IS quite obvious and doesn't take time. If it's poor translation you do need to have someone with the proper skills actually sit down and check it. I was told that CS has the means to check whether a translation is decent or not. Well, maybe not anymore. I wonder how many more buyers are gonna have their money stolen before this seller is finally banned. 😵
  8. I tried reporting a thief 5 months ago, CS did nothing so I gave up and stopped. I think I tried again 2 months ago (with proof), again nothing. So I gave up again. Just the other day I came across her gig, looks like she has been successful with scamming people and is now a level 2 seller. Gosh I hope she someone reports her and she gets her account deleted, but @maitasun , what kind of magic did you use to get this thief's gig deleted right away?? I've been trying for months just to get rid of ONE thief! 😅
  9. There were posts that were deleted after I pointed out that the OP shouldn't be offering writing gig due to his lack of English abilities, we went back and forth and it was going nowhere, that post was deleted. Stuff like that has happened quite often I believe. I agree to that too, but I think the sad thing is that spammers are not aware that they are spamming??😅
  10. For slurping sounds, we have zuzu, or zuru zuru, it can be zururururu, or even tsururururu, etc etc. We Japanese tend to get...ahem, oddly "creative" with sound effects!!
  11. I feel like the definition for "hate speech" is kinda-sorta getting blurry and unclear. Maybe it's just me, but when I point out certain things and sound harsh/strict, it seems like that is seen as hate speech... even though what I am doing is, again, pointing out facts. I've seen some posts being deleted, and while I do understand why some of them were deleted, I believe there were a good number of them that made me go "What in the heck was the problem with that post?" I guess we'll continue seeing spams no matter what, but the amount is quite insane.
  12. Onions, tofu, avocado. Chicken breast as well. I love salads, I love to eat tons of veggies....however, I do love my unhealthy food too. Ramen, deep fried food, chocolate, alcohol, you name it!!!! I try to eat both healthy and unhealthy food to balance things out. "TRY" is the keyword here.
  13. Looking at your gigs it looks very decent to me, unlike those "help me get sells" people with no skills. For your translation gig it MIGHT help if you create a video if yourself talking in English and Spanish, just to clearly prove that you are bilingual. You might want to promote your gig to your target audience, but sadly that's something I can't help you with since I have zero experience in marketing. If you have 7+ years of experience, do you know any people around you who might be able to help with marketing/promoting?
  14. Maybe we should break this down a biiiiiiiit more. 1. Your profile image sucks. ( using bad/low grainy photos, images that does not show who you are and what you can do, images of people that are NOT you, etc) 2. Your gig description sucks. ( copy/paste quilt from other sellers, filled with grammar errors) 3. An extension of #2: Your gig description is filled with LIES LIES LIES. No, there is no way you can offer writing gigs because your description is filled with grammar mistakes. No, stealing images from online does NOT make you a professional graphic designer. No, using Google does NOT make you a translator. There is NO way you are a digital marketing expert when you don't have any sales yourself. I guess that's about it? I bet I'm gonna get those "good tips" posts again.
  15. A seller from Japan here. I gotta say, I go to sleep when I want to/need to UNLESS there is some emergency rush-job ( and the buyer is willing to pay extra for it) I will not stay up just to work on a FIverr gig. Again, UNLESS there is a good reason to do so.
  16. Oh we're talking about deep-fried-sexy-hot and knock-your-socks-off level of attractiveness, of course!! Jokes aside though, I wonder how many more of these posts we're gonna see before this weekend is over.
  17. It seems SO incredibly, mindblowingly, ridiculously, knock-your-socks-off-simple, yet so many people seem to not get it. It's a MAJOR head-scratcher for me. I'm not trying to sound rude or mean here, when I see certain people here, I want to grab the side of their heads, look into their eyes and ask ARE YOU IN THERE!!??
  18. I remember sooooooooooooo many guys at school wearing that long black trench coat and those sunglasses, trying to look cool after that movie came out... Sorry guys, no offense but none of you are Keanu Reeves...(yes yes, I know, I sound so mean) I'll be watching it for sure, like @enunciatorsaid for me the first movie was the best but I still saw the sequels too and even though they were not the best it was still entertaining. I'm sure I'll be watching the fourth movie as well 😄
  19. I guess for this year August went somewhat slow, but no complaints. For my field I don't think I have a busy month, it just changes every week/month so I have no idea what to expect in September. I only pray that it gets cooler with less humidity, Tokyo is not the best place to be during the summer. 😅 It's hard to believe that it's almost September though, then the countdown to Halloween will start ( at least in some areas) and it'll be Christmas before you know it. Times flies.
  20. I've seen new graphic designers who are actually skilled, but unfortunately their English skills were not quite there yet. Their defense was "Our work will speak for us, it's OK if our English is not that good." Well, it's not. If I saw 2 gigs, both looked very good with amazing original samples, but one had a good description with zero grammar errors and the other had errors in them there is a HIGH chance I'll take the seller with the better English. One reason is because I get the feeling I would have less problems communicating. It's hard to get your point across at times even if both of you spoke the same language at a native level, I believe it will be even harder if the other person lacked the language skills. Second is English level etc aside, the seller did not take the time and didn't bother proofreading the description, did not ask a native/native level person to check the description. That for me is lack of professionalism. For me personally, this is the bigger reason why I would avoid a seller with poor description. IF the images or samples were blow-my-mind-and knock-my-socks-and-sneakers-off-level good, then I might go for the seller with the poor description. I kinda think that's rare though...
  21. They dangle that same bait for experienced sellers too, unfortunately. It's their way of trying to get a discount from skilled people. Luckily though, most skilled sellers don't fall for that... Sometimes those buyers tries to get a "free sample" from new sellers saying that it MIGHT lead to a long-term project. That's a red flag too!
  22. According to some online news, it's says: "season three is on indefinite hold (not technically cancelled)" Not sure what that means, but I'll try to.....well, wait for it to restart...someday!?
  23. OHHHHHHHH, I have, I have!!! I'm a biiiiit of a "true crime freak" if you will, and my friend recommended that to me. My jaw dropped when I saw Ed Kemper, the actor did a fantastic job. When I saw a glimpse of that particular guy at that one particular scene, I knew right away it was Wayne Williams...and that kinda scared my friend! 😅
