Beware of this new scam

Recommended Posts

I opened my seller account yesterday and have already received two DANGEROUS scam attempts. Is this normal? What is Fiverr doing to prevent such scams? How can i protect from others? Honestly, I didn’t fall for the second one just because I work in banking and am a very cautious person, but please, BE CAREFUL!!!!

Yes, new to Fiverr and the second one just happened to me - almost had me. Trying to work out a way to inform Fiverr?

This that I posted was a very well-constructed scam, I imagine many people could fall for it. Yes, I would like Fiverr to know about this and try to prevent from happening. I assume it's standard practice for Fiverr NOT to ask for credit card details to receive payments, if this information alone is clearly communicated, it could save many people from this and other scams.

Hello @allegromoderato @andrewaccooper

We understand your concerns about the safety of your accounts. Know that we are aware of the issue and actively working on resolving it. Scammers are becoming increasingly creative, and that is why it is important to report them to our Customer Support immediately. Send an email to support@fiverr.com with all the screenshots you have. We need to be aware of their new ways so that we can take the appropriate steps.

We strongly recommend not opening suspicious links, QR codes, or files from senders you have not contacted directly. Please be aware that Fiverr will never contact you via inbox to request payments, passwords, or private information.

Have you received the message below when you logged into your Fiverr account? In addition, please take a moment to read our pinned posts and this informative article from the Help Center on Staying safe on the platform.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Lena, for your very clear message. I know that Fiverr does everything to ensure the complete safety of its community, and that scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people and bypass checks and security.

For your information, here’s what led me to think it wasn’t a scam:
- the request came directly from Fiverr’s DM system, i received as a normal message inside the Fiverr legit website.

- The buyer told me she needs my email because my account was not verified, that's how i received the scam link. Unfortunately it was my first order and I don’t know the procedure.

- The website link and layout was "acceptable," fiverr dot autodirect dot website. Also no matter what I clicked in the website, it redirected me to the real Fiverr site and every link led to the correct page.

- Not having being told to be careful, by the mean that in my mind it was almost impossible to being scammed when asking for a payment...

What raised my suspicions:

- at first the generic request, "I'll pay you first, then I'll tell you what to do."

- The urgency, repeated to the point of annoyance, but this is was also a double-edged sword because, not finding an immediate way to contact fiverr or verify if it was genuine, in panic I might have clicked and entered sensitive information to avoid the ban or suspension the scammer told me i could face.

- Lastly, the request for credit card details to receive a payment, that was a very big red flag for me.

Thank you so much for your support!

I’m a new seller andsssssss1.jpg.f6dbbd29f93895c4e2dd2434e50995e2.jpg just listed my services yesterday. This exact thing happened to me a couple of hours ago. I clicked on a link to accept a payment, and a chat popped up asking for my card details to verify my identity. They almost scammed me. On top of that, the other three buyers have been asking for my email address.

If you observe the shared URL, you will find it does not look legitimate. We should always be careful before clicking a URL or opening a shared file. Suppose we find anything suspicious in that chat like it may be a malicious URL or illegal service asking. In that case, we can report that message and block the user or ask Fiverr to review that message for our safety. To add an extra layer of security, we can scan the file or URL before opening it. Thank you!

I got one of those yesterday. I'd like to be able to say more; however, if we point out the weaknesses, that helps them get better.

Unfortunately, i think they are all scammers.... they ask for your email so they can send you the scam link on the email. I have a gig online , few days, and i received like 3 4 scam attemps DAILY. I just hope I can tell when the first real buyer asks me for information and I don't mistake them for yet another scammer.

The funny thing is that I started playing along, dragging it out as long as possible, saying I didn't understand what I needed to do, giving them fake email addresses and saying I didn't receive anything, or asking for useless details, in the hope of reducing their daily earnings and hoping they'll move on to somewhere else

Wow, your article has been incredibly helpful to me. I'm a new seller on Fiverr and today I encountered the situation you described. A client wanted to purchase my service but was asked to provide my email address during the ordering process, and he requested my email address with a screenshot. I was initially excited about someone buying my service, but then I became suspicious. I tried purchasing services from others to check if an email address was required, and found that it was not. I also noticed that his screenshot was not a full-screen capture, which led me to suspect that he was trying to deceive me into revealing my email. I responded, asking him to provide a full-screen screenshot, but he did not reply afterward. I even submitted a request to Fiverr's support team to confirm the situation. Seeing your article has confirmed that this is indeed a scam, and I hope this helps other sellers as well. The capture here!!!

Have they done anything about this scam yet? I just posted my first 2 gigs last night and 2 hours in I have had 6 of these types of emails and they just keep coming. I dont want to spend my evenings weeding through all the scams to see if there was anyone who was legit customer asking a real questions and having to report all sorts of scam emails.
