Notification blobs?

OK hanging up my hat for this thread:
What we have learned from a very ad-hoc, user-based straw-poll:

GREEN BLOB:
The green Blob means you are online (obvs - cos you are logged in and using the service - so of course you are online - duh,)
It MAY be a way to see if you are online, but visible/invisible to other users.
BUT… sometimes it goes wrong and there is a bug - so the green blob goes away.
Making it useless / actually detrimental for obvious reasons.
Multiple users report bugs / errors with the green blob and it’s meaning/reliability/repeatability.

PINK BLOB:
It is probably supposed to tell you you have outstanding messages.
Multiple users report inconsistencies with its status and usefulness.
Multiple users report bugs / errors with the pink blob and it’s meaning/reliability/repeatability.
