  1. I’ve only lived in one Latin American country, so I can tell you this: "English is a foreign language with a great demand in Venezuela. It is spoken by many academics and professionals and by some members of the middle and high social classes. There is an English language newspaper in Caracas: The Daily Journal , founded in 1946. The use of English arose in part due to the presence of oil companies from English speaking countries (especially from the United States) since the beginning of the 20th century. English is taught as a compulsory subject in the secondary education and in the bachillerato for five years. According to the syllabus approved by the Venezuelan Ministry of Education in 1986 English language is considered as a tool to communicate with people from other countries and to obtain information in the areas of humanities, technology and science. Despite the lines provided by the syllabus, few people learn to speak the language with only the knowledge acquired at school. In some universities degree programs to train teachers or translators of English language are offered. In the rest of universities English is studied as a compulsory subject to understand texts written in this language" There are also American Schools all over Latin-America (as well as French and German schools) were you’re taught in that language and come out speaking it perfectly.
  2. I am at 21% and I too need more African countries. I have 3 now. I do not have any in South America. Although I do have a Fiverr PM friend from there. 😉 That is surprising. Even though the main language of South America is Spanish (except for Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, Aruba, Belize, Curacao, Haiti, etc), people do need services in English. So I reckon you will get international orders soon enough. I get them because I’m bilingual, and sometimes I use one or two tags in Spanish.
  3. It simply reflects where your buyers come from. I’m at 60%, I need more African countries, I’m missing 3 countries in South America (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana). I do wish Fiverr’s map was better, there are some countries I can’t see. I can’t find the PNG (Papua New Guinea). Is that east of Indonesia?
  4. For me, passion dictates how often I release. Writing is my life, and I write quickly so I’ve been able to publish a book per month so far. I can write for hours non-stop but that’s at the expense of not having a social life. Well, my suggestion would be to balance your social life, instead of seeing your friends every weekend, see them every other weekend. If you have a gift for writing, you should exploit it, it might even create a passive source of income for every book published. Of course, it’s important for writers to have a life outside of writing. I’m not a fan of Hemingway, but the man lived a life full of action, he rode horses, hunted, was chased by bulls in Spain, etc.
  5. Wish people would realize this. Actually, it’s a whole lot of marketing behind it than just being lazy. The fact is that there are only so many books that one person can write per month, and more releases mean more $$$ so some authors hire ghostwriters in order to do the rapid release strategy. That makes sense, I’m just glad my favorite writers don’t do that. Quality > Quantity. Even if it’s lowbrow fiction that makes the so-called “intellectuals” frown, it needs to be good if not great. I’ll even forgive bad spelling and grammar as long as it’s a ■■■■ good story. I’m not saying it’s not important, I’m just saying I’ve read plenty of boring goods that had perfect grammar and spelling.
  6. Fiverr isn’t responsible for a crooked ghostwriter, nor are they responsible for an author that can’t recognize plagiarism that everyone else recognized. Also, I would think that a popular author values her name, and would protect it from a ghostwriter who might not even be as good as her, even if he or she isn’t a plagiarist. It is one thing for a celebrity or politician who can’t write, to hire a ghostwriter, that’s understandable. But when you’re a published author, hiring a ghostwriter is just plain laziness. In the end, it doesn’t matter, people complain about Fiverr all the time and yet the website keeps growing. People come here because it’s like going to a supermarket, you find what you need and order it. I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon.
  7. It’s not enough to look at the queue to judge popularity, you should look at whether they deliver in 1-day, 3-days, 7-days, etc. With that said, for me what matters the most is whether my gig appears on the first page, hopefully the first four rows.
  8. Reddit usually hates self-promoters. You’re there to ask questions, answer questions, comment, etc. I suppose you could put your link on your profile page, but commenting with your link is spamming, and you’ll get banned in no time.
  9. The trick is selling something that 100% of the world needs, which is easier said than done. There’s also the issue of language. A client who needs something in French can’t get it from someone who doesn’t speak French.
  10. How many years have you been studying English? You write very well. I don’t think struggling with English makes you a “non-professional freelancer.” As long as you can understand the instructions and are doing a task that has nothing to do with writing, mastery of English isn’t necessary. Furthermore, in the advertising industry, we never expect Art Directors and graphic designer to catch spelling mistakes or to even read the copy that goes into an ad. It’s great if they do, but that’s not their job. It’s also absurd to expect the entire world to speak English. It’s a very useful language, but even in Europe, you’re going to find places where nobody speaks English.
  11. I hope you don’t give up on Fiverr. Even with this excessive fee, it’s still more affordable than Fiverr’s competitors. Besides, everywhere you look, companies are seeking new revenue streams. Netflix is going to start airing commercials. Amazon Prime sometimes has a promo before the movie or TV show starts. Airlines charge for check baggage. Many hotels have a “resort fee.” I get that buying a $5 fee and then paying $7 is annoying, but on other websites, I bet that same gig costs you $10, $20, or $50, assuming you can find it.
  12. Now, my response was friendly and clear as well as establishing the fact that I value myself correctly. It had a little humor, but was also quite straight to the point - what you are offering is not enough, period. This has resulted in a series of projects with this client and will total 250k words by the end, all at my going rate with a small discount that I offered after the first 50,000 words. If I had just said “No” to the client, that would have been the end of it. If I had accepted that rate, I would be absolutely miserable working on this while having to send away higher paying clients. Moreover, the client is exceptionally happy with the work and the overall experience. Now, this situation is just one of many similar cases where the initial contact with the client was what others would call negative. Some clients do not order with me because my price is higher than their budget - that’s ok. They go away disappointed because they cannot work with me - some even come back weeks or months later having saved up the required amount! So there you have it, dealing with “bad buyers” is not so bad usually. How you handle them can dramatically change things for both of you. Try it out next time and see how it goes. If you disagree or can take nothing else from this whole post, just go read the Valuing Yourself Properly section again. With some buyers one has to play detective, find out what they really want, and if it’s too difficult, then it’s easy to say “no.” I have a question about that. Do hashtags work? Sometimes I see people using 5 or 10 different hashtags in their Facebook posts, is it effective?
  13. Don’t worry too much about the pro sellers, very few people can afford their prices, so their market isn’t your market. Success on Fiverr doesn’t always equal success outside of Fiverr. That’s why many amazing people will never be chosen as PRO sellers. If you don’t have an amazing resume, a ton of awards if applicable, a proven track record of success, you won’t be a pro seller, but you might become a Top Rated Seller, if you’re lucky.
  14. That’s exactly what it is. For a logo I once ordered, my revision request was to have the palm tree being blown by a wind from the left instead of the right. It was my second revision, but I promised the seller a tip. I rarely demand more than one revision, sometimes I will close an order only to order again. Sellers love that.
  15. Right, the custom offer form only includes price, number of revisions, and delivery days. So if you want to mention something else, you have to write it in the offer. Personally, I would let the client ask me how much for revisions vs. telling him what they cost. It’s better to avoid negative things, most clients don’t want to think that their work will require a revision, they hope you get it right the first time.
  16. I don’t put 1 revision in custom offers, I leave that blank. I know the client can demand revisions whether they are included or not. It’s really a matter of luck whether you get a good or bad client, but I recommend you use your own criteria. If every time you create X for tech companies you end up with revision requests, maybe you should avoid them in the future. On the other hand, if your tobacco, alcohol, etc, clients love you, then bid away. Also, in your custom offer, tell your clients you will not make more than 1 revision, if this is a problem. Some clients will appreciate your honesty.
  17. There’s some abuse, although I haven’t experienced it much. My trick is not to over promise, if you create high expectations and fail to deliver, clients are more likely to demand revisions, refunds, etc.
  18. But everyone isn’t offering things for $5, it depends on the gig and the seller. Those who advertise their gigs online and want high conversions can benefit from a $5 price range. Asking people to spend $5 is easier than $50, $100, etc. Either way, I don’t know why Fiverr wants to rival other competitors. Fiverr is Fiverr, it’s unique, it can’t rival any other site. If Fiverr becomes fancy, traffic will drop, and all sellers will get hurt. The internet is all about traffic, if a million people are searching gigs on Fiverr, your chances of getting an order are huge, but if only 10,000 people are searching, your chances diminish.
  19. Are these explainer videos for your gigs or your clients? I never buy anything for my clients. They know that VO, graphic design, video editing, are done by other people. I just provide a word document. Of course, if you sell videos and people are paying you for VO, I understand you would buy that. However, it might be easier for your clients to hire the VO artists on their own, and then hire you when they have the mp3.
  20. Yes, they will add another $2 onto the tip. I left a lovely Seller a tip (today) but didn’t mind paying the extra, it was worth it. I don’t know if I’m making enough money to give a tip. This month has been terrible, why should I reward Fiverr with more fees? Fees discourage business! Some people hate low cost airlines because they’re full of fees. “Oh? You want to check a bag? That’s gonna be $100.” This $2 fee leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Like those bars where you have to pay a cover to enter so you’re losing money before you start drinking.
  21. Today I bought something on Fiverr. I paid $15 plus a $2 fee, even though I had $95 in my balance. Will they charge me another $2 if I give this seller a tip? I hope Fiverr realizes these fees discourage me from placing orders. If it wasn’t a project for family, a project where I need help because it’s for someone I care about and need a second opinion, I wouldn’t have made my purchase.
  22. Exactly, and because we’re using our money to buy things instead of dealing with credit cards, paypal, etc, Fiverr isn’t paying a fee to process the transaction. So what possible justification can be for the fee other than squeezing us for more money? Fiverr should be encouraging us to make purchases, this $2 fee does the opposite. Sellers who worked hard to earn their money aren’t eager to pay 40% more every time they make a $5 purchase.
  23. They just want to make more money, like the airlines with their ridiculous fees. Welcome to Air Fiver, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
  24. I know what you mean. Not everyone in New York or California who owns a million dollar home is a millionaire. Some people bought homes in the 50s, 60s, and 70s for $20,000-$50,000 and have seen their estates increase in value. Still, property ownership is a characteristic that distinguishes current and potential millionaires from the rest of us. A property owner is responsible for taxes, repairs, assessments (condo owners), etc. A renter isn’t. Those who are lifelong renters are basically wasting their money, with no possibility of ever getting it back. In “The Millionaire Next Door,” we learn about people who buy used cars, used clothes, clip coupons, they only go big when it comes to accountants, lawyers, and the things where you can’t afford to be cheap. The book explains how sometimes doctors and lawyers struggle becoming millionaires because their lifestyles demand they join a country club or drive a fancy car just to make a great impression and land clients. To get rich one must eliminate all needless spending. Is that how most people live? Not quite. Many people simply charge everything on their credit cards, get that new iPhone X, book that trip to New Zealand, go to Burning Man, get another tattoo, eventually the person finds himself broke. Some will brag that they live within their means, but that’s not good enough. Spending 100% of what you make isn’t the path to wealth. It is those who live beneath their means, who buy a fixer upper instead of a brand new home, that might become millionaires.
