What do I do if the product I receive is just not as good as portfolio?

I have people ask me to clone the work of others all the time. I decline every time because Williams, Zimmer, Glass… all sound as they do because they are who they are. I may be able to add some of that feel but clones fail because they have to fail.

The idea that someone can get a creative to deliver to the T, esp if they can’t explain or discuss the feelings that this work must show is clueless at least, or really scary, as it suggests that they think that people exist only to serve their narrative. Worse that thee person couldn’t possibly bring any real unique facets to the job.

A great Freelancer will want to get into your narrative - and more importantly, the vision that you want your customers to feel and deliver that using their unique voice. If Zimmer had scored Star Wars, it wouldn’t be remotely like what Williams did. If I had scored Star Wars it would have sounded very different again. Star Wars without Williams’s score probably would have been one passably successful film with no sequels, as forgotten as “Battle For The Stars”.

I lose work for having this mindset but to do otherwise would be cheating the audience, myself, the craft I adore, and therefore the client.

When a specialist says “No” ask why and really listen. Listen to what they recommend, ask questions. Then Hire them because they care about your job.
