How to deal with buyers that contact freelancers to ask for advice?

Once in a while I am being contacted by a buyer who asks me for some advice. As an example, today one of such buyers contacted me to find "dll qr Code generator work for delphi 7 offline" (a programming library). Doing a small Google search, I found his component, but now what? If I help him, he could simply walk away and I did my work for free. If I charge him with a small fee (5$, let's say), then he must accept it before he gets the library, or the URL to it. But after that he can cancel the order and, again, get work for free.

What's the best solution here? I read this topic (which is helpful), but I am thinking that there may be a way for both parties to be satisfied.

Buyers could theoretically cancel no matter what size gig you've submitted.

My recommendation is to do as you would normally do:

  • Provide a quote
  • Send a custom gig
  • Fulfill the requirements
  • Submit

I hope this helps 😀
