Why does payment clearing take so long?

Not necessarily here to bitch, whine or moan, but really curious why it takes so long for funds to clear? Anyone with insights?

I completed my gig on Sept. 29th, and it is taking until October 5th to clear? Why is it taking such an immense amount of time? This is kind of getting annoying.
