I received an order in vacation mode. What steps to do I take to cancel or extend it without negatively impacting myself?

The only way I know of to completely prevent any order from being placed is to pause the gig.

Concerning the order, have you talked to the Buyer? Politely state that you're unavailable, when you will be available, and what they'd prefer to do: cancel or extension.

As for 'negative affects', cancellations happen, but will stop affecting an account after 60 days. There's nothing that can be done to avoid that, but it can be recovered from. An extension would be preferable, but it's more important to communicate and make sure the Buyer's time and resources are treated with respect.
