Fiverr, in general has gotten many facelifts in the past few years, but some major issues still remain.

I've been trying to figure out why this could be for a while now, and came up with some theories. Some of this I've mentioned before, but it's always good to talk about. 

The buyer vs seller experience is quite different

Okay, whoever is reading this is going to say 'of course, Kata, that is the whole point. Well.. yes, but also no.

There's a few things that I think make it so. 

Buyers don't know how the site works, even if they've been using it for a while. This is true for several aspects of it, from the TOS to separating the order page vs regular messages (which makes sense to us, but not to them). This creates a pretty nasty dissonance between sellers who are fiercely trying to keep their success scores and buyers who don't even know that they are supposed to receive updates on the order page. Now, some of this, I admit, can't be avoided. If every single buyer knew how the success score worked exactly, well… that could also be a liability. But… right now, we have buyers who don't know of the TOS trying to break it (though without meaning to) getting mad at sellers who are just trying to do their jobs. Fair from their side, absolutely, but also difficult from ours. 

Buyers just want their jobs done. Sure, good communication is a plus and so are several other things, but in the end, many people don't want daily updates. Or… updates at all. Many do, but others might feel annoyed at the constant messages (if they notice them) coming from sellers. 

The site itself doesn't feel very intuitive on the buyer side. I can't entirely pinpoint why, but it's clear that many new users (both buyers AND wannabe sellers) get lost.

But of course, all of these issues can fairly easily be avoided as long as the seller is internet-savvy enough. However, it's still common to run into issues because buyers don't know what's going on.

Still… there is a much bigger issue that I want to talk about here.

2. The order page is broken. Almost all the time.

This has been… bothersome at best and problematic at worst. Because here is what happens:

You have buyers who just want to get their jobs done (either with or without lots of input from the sellers)

Sellers who just want to get paid AND keep their metrics up…

And a page that doesn't work. From messages not showing up to files not coming through to DELIVERIES not popping up as notifications… It's a mess. I've had many buyers go away for a whole week (or more) not realizing that I sent 4-5 messages through the order page at that time, simply because they weren't notified even if they had notifications on. I've seen people log in, check their inbox (likely) but not the order page for 3 days straight because it was.. broken. Or lost. It's a bit hard for me to tall. 

I do understand that a lot of this is user error, but still. If we are constantly monitored for our success score, we NEED an order page that works. Otherwise we end up in situations where projects are delayed and people are unhappy BECAUSE the site is broken (and obviously, some people can't separate rating the site from rating freelancers…)

3. Fiverr's communication isn't always great

This one is a ‘bonus’, perhaps, but it's been annoying me for a while. Oftentimes, users (on both sides) aren't notified when something breaks on the site. (I'm looking at the vacation mode potentially ruining my account two years ago). It's the internet, things break all the time. But… when the order page is  down, or when inbox messages don't get sent through,  shouldn't at least sellers get a soft heads-up? Something quick in our emails like ‘hey guys, we are experiencing X going on, don’t deliver right now' would be much better than late orders because of bugs (or similar.)

Still, I do love working on here and I adore the writing and game design I get to do. But… I do hope that this post will kickstart some conversation about things that could improve to be better for buyers and sellers alike!
