I want to talk about something that sits at the center of Fiverr’s business model: the 20 percent commission. Not because it is new, but because it has been normalized for so long that many of us stopped questioning it.

For years, sellers were told this was simply the cost of access. That logic made sense when platforms mainly connected freelancers and clients. But Fiverr is no longer just a marketplace. Visibility is filtered by algorithms. Ranking is engineered. Traffic is often pay to play. Conversion is shaped by tools that sellers are encouraged, or pressured, to buy.

In this environment, a flat commission starts to feel less like a service fee and more like a structural extraction.

The impact is uneven. Sellers with low margins and those who deliver highly specialized work carry a heavier burden. Many invest in equipment, software, continuous training, and years of experience. Yet they pay the same percentage as high volume, low cost gigs. As productivity rises, the platform captures more value without sharing risk or lowering its take.

When this is combined with promoted gigs, paid visibility, and payout delays, the commission begins to resemble rent on labor rather than payment for intermediation.

If the goal is a healthier marketplace, there are more balanced paths:

• A progressive commission model, where the percentage declines as sellers reach consistent revenue thresholds.

• Reduced fees for repeat clients, encouraging stability instead of constant churn.

• Structural commission cuts tied to seller level, so experience and reliability materially improve earnings.

• A capped commission after a lifetime revenue milestone, preventing the platform from indefinitely extracting the same share from long term professionals.

• Partial commission rebates for sellers who invest in promoted gigs, avoiding double monetization of the same labor.

Fiverr often speaks about empowering freelancers. But empowerment is not a slogan. It is economic design. A platform that scales by permanently taxing labor at a high fixed rate risks weakening the very workforce that sustains it.

I am curious to hear from other long term sellers. Has the 20 percent become easier to absorb over time, or harder as the platform has evolved?

And I would genuinely like to hear from Fiverr as well. Is this commission still considered fair in today’s ecosystem, not the one that existed a decade ago?
