In July I wrote an article related to how new users could get their first order. It was targeted at gig creation and optimizing keywords, descriptions and a general explanation of different features, including the meaning of impressions and clicks and what they tell you. It was created after seeing many of the same questions each and every day. I see new questions, people still wondering why they did not receive their first order yet even though they worked on all the earlier tips. So I went to the drawing board again. (These topics are important to understand how Fiverr works, and how you fit into their business model and how learning this can benefit you).


 Fiverr is a platform where freelancers can offer their services to a worldwide network of users of 3.8 million buyers (last year 4.2 million). This means that Fiverr itself doesn’t sell the services, but the platform for others to do so. They manage the site, implement the features, ensure the site is safe and data get’s carefully stored & shared.
 But how does Fiverr earn money? They earn their income in 2 main ways (not including extra features provided by the platform) 

This means that Fiverr doesn’t sell products, doesn’t sell services, it sells… you! We 

 are the product of Fiverr. That means that Fiverr has a few tasks to ensure they “keep” their product available. Here are some tasks that Fiverr does: 

Fiverr ranks high on Google for freelance-related keywords 

Blog content, guides, and Fiverr Learn courses improve its organic reach. 

Fiverr runs Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and YouTube promotions targeting businesses and entrepreneurs. 

Retargeting campaigns bring back potential buyers who visited but didn’t purchase. 

Fiverr uses Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube to showcase freelancer success stories and buyer testimonials. 

Collaborations with influencers and YouTubers promote Fiverr services to new audiences. 

Fiverr offers commissions to affiliates who drive new buyers to the platform. 

Referral bonuses encourage existing users to invite others. 

Fiverr sends personalized emails with service recommendations based on user behavior. 

Retargeting ads bring back visitors who didn’t complete a purchase. 

Fiverr has features on the site that encourages buyers to start their new project, or give suggestions like: 

“service X would fit great with your latest project”

Fiverr markets directly to startups and companies looking to outsource work. 

Fiverr Business provides team management features, attracting larger clients. 

Fiverr sponsors events, podcasts, and publications to stay visible in the gig economy space.
 TV ads and digital campaigns enhance brand trust.

Make it easy to buy services
 Make navigating the site easy
 Create a safe site for buyers and freelancers
 Give information about how their platform works

20% of your entire order, 20% of your tips, and a percentage of the transaction fee.

They released a report announcing their 2024 yearly revenue was between 

 billion earned a year by all freelancers together. That’s a lot of money made by freelancers. (this is an estimate, and Fiverr didn’t earn THAT much, it’s the combined amount of money earned)
 So now that you know how Fiverr earns money and how much they (estimated) make, we can start to learn how (you) can earn money on the platform and get your first order. 

 freelance sellers. The exact number of sellers is not mentioned anywhere, but there are estimates that there are over 

. This means active and inactive sellers. So sellers who already made orders, sellers with no orders AND inactive seller accounts. 

If only 25% of these numbers are correct, you can still imagine that the competition is sky high! And that you need some serious skills to become successful 

(or just earn X amount of money needed to live comfortable).


Then there is also a difference in the demand in certain categories. Here are the main categories in Fiverr: 


The Graphic design category is the most searched and in demand service category on Fiverr. Let’s take the most popular service 


When you select Logo Design in the Graphic Design category, you are met with 

. As you can imagine, Fiverr cannot show you each gig at the same time, so they rely on a search page with search results. Now let’s look at a lesser known service on Fiverr “

That’s a big difference. The Game Concept Design section is the perfect way to show how the search result works. 

You see the most successful gig first, together with the gigs with orders and reviews 

. You’ll also see that the lowest gigs are all either low priced, less attractive or just not really 

 trustworthy. You can also see a significant difference in the gig images of the more successful gigs and the not so successful gigs. 

TIP: Your gig creation time should NOT be a 10 minute job. It’s normal to spend up to 3 hours to ensure you have a GOOD gig image. A good gig ensures your potential buyers get the answers they need, instead of only creating more questions.

 categories have their benefits, but also their downsides. Let’s take a look at both of them! 

(On Fiverr, a lot of people are looking for logos).

Fiverr is optimized to offer this service. 

(Logo Design was one of the foundation services for Fiverr).

(Too many sellers want to offer Logo Design services 180.000+).

Successful gigs only offering logos for $10.

(Unrealistic pricing for the amount of time needed to spend).

Overflowed with inexperienced sellers claiming they are “professionals”.

(It’s a trend for new sellers to claim that they are professionals while not having any kind of experience).

 (Sellers can be spotted easier in a less crowded market).

 (Also on Fiverr, the Game Concept Design service is less in need, so sellers are able to be spotted easier on the platform).

 (It could mean that it’s easier to climb the search results ladder).

 (Less demand also means less buyers, it can be a fight between 3 sellers in a category).

(Since fewer buyers may be actively looking for your service, you might experience longer waiting times between inquiries or orders. This can make it harder to establish momentum and keep a steady flow of business).

 (Reviews and social proof are crucial on Fiverr. With less demand, you may struggle to build a portfolio of positive reviews).

 While giving an exact number or position to “your odds” is impossible to do, you can take this information into consideration and ask yourself a few questions. Here are the questions you could learn more about: 

Is my category either in high or low demand, is there growth potential, are there many orders in the category, are there alot of reviews being left? 

Is my investment worth it considering the competition? 

What is your promotional plan? Do you solely rely on the Fiverr search result or are you going to suggest your service to buyers from other gigs? 

Is this service something I’m really good at? 

Am I able to consistently deliver high quality offers, to build a strong portfolio of social proof? 

Is my service highly influenced by trust? 

(example: buyers could be more likely to order a flyer with a new buyer than a full logo design package).


 Not every buyer is the same. You have experienced buyers, inexperienced buyers, new buyers, old

 buyers that don’t fully understand the internet, buyers that are in a hurry, buyers that are bad at communication, and many more variants out there. 

That’s why it’s important to consider which buyer you want to target 

 and what buyer you need to target at the moment 

. Now I hear you wonder, why does that matter? 

Well, in the ideal world, your buyer is experienced with both Fiverr and the internet, they are patient, they understand a 

 (enough to know that the work you do takes time and effort)

 and you want your buyer to be able to communicate well, so it’s easy to understand what they want and the adjustments they need. 


What we can expect from a buyer like this, is that it’s generally less likely that they would buy from a new seller. These buyers are more cautious, they take the time to look at your information, your reviews, your earlier work and other aspects of your profile. These buyers are more likely to spot inconsistencies in your profile and description if you don’t update them both. 

 so now, firstly the buyer sees your gig with 6 years experience, and now on your profile it shows just 4, which one is true? What else is false? Is this seller trustworthy? I am confused now, I’m not going to buy from this seller. 

And just like that, with one little inconsistency, you create more and more questions resulting in the buyer going elsewhere. That’s why it’s so important to keep checking your gigs and profile, and to ensure that your information is consistent. THIS TAKES TIME!
