Ask the Community

So, you're new on Fiverr, sitting at your desk (or in a lovely café), waiting for that first (or third) order.

Many of us started out like this: unsure if the site was even working - or, just in general, what was going on!

See, for the most part, we're used to routines. Your boss will give you something to do on Monday and you finish it up by Friday (or the next week, who knows!) At the end of the day, you'll go and get some groceries and the next day, it wll all repeat again.

Of course, you expect to have the same routine even if you change your employment, right?

Working online can throw a wrench in your plans simply just by being a little different.

Having an account on Fiverr (or on other sites) does not guarantee work. No matter how much time you spend online or tweaking your gigs, you never know what will happen! 

Because, unlike an employer with whom you'd sign a contract, Fiverr does NOT owe you anything.

I remember the first time I lost all my work (many years ago) due to not being able to finish some orders (

 I thought that once I'd back, things would be fixed (regulars, please do understand; this was the younger Kata who had yet to learn better!). 

Of course, that's not what happened! I had to work my way back up to the top - well, level 2!

My point here is that as a freelancer, there are lots of pros:

- You decide when and where you work from!

- No one is going to be mad if you chat with your co-workers (...because often, you have none!)

- You can work in your pyjamas unless you have meetings!

But there are also many cons, which are often overlooked. 

- Some weeks can be hectic, only to have little to do at all the week after.

- And, of course, irregular hours that are often NOT the right fit for people.

- Dealing with other people who might not understand your value (or are just cranky)

Before deciding to work on Fiverr, everyone should weigh these pros and cons. We all need to ask ourselves, 'Is this even the thing I want to do?'

Now, am I saying no one should freelance? Of course not! 

All I'm saying is that before you think about it as a regular job, it's best to approach it as something more flexible and less frequent. Once you're at the top, well...

But until then, there's a whole lot to do!
