Q&A With Tommy Jones

Why did you decide to become a Community Leader, and what does that mean to you?

Having arrived on fiverr in 2013 - I’ve had the unique opportunity to experience Fiverr’s evolution from inexpensive marketplace to the premiere destination for online business. The “Community Leadership” role is a chance to share what I’ve learned by navigating the various eras of Fiverr’s existence - passing on the concepts I’ve used to work in an exclusively remote capacity - and welcoming new sellers to think outside the box for interesting idea exchanges.

What excites you most about the launch of the U.S. Club?

It’s no secret that Fiverr’s US division is one of the largest markets on the platform. Giving the US its own hub will instantly invite creative discussions, think-tank opportunities and breed a unity between established sellers and their newly onboarding counterparts. As a “Community Leader” I will help define a space of creative inclusion - openly calling on people to help orchestrate an environment of unorthodox thinking, problem solving and encouragement.

What brought you to Fiverr? What were you doing before?

In 2013 the music business was in turmoil. Illegal downloading had eviscerated the “royalty model.” Streaming services were still twisting themselves into a permanent shape and writers found themselves without publishing deals or staffs. I’d spent my life in music, begining my band leader status as a child performer and landing on songwriting staffs at 13 years old. I was prepared to spend my life working with publishing firms - when suddenly the music world was restructured. This gave me an opportunity to become a certified sales trainer, launch brick and mortar businesses and retool my songwriting model. Fiverr gave me an opportunity to eliminate the middle man, bringing my songwriting and production skills directly to the artists themselves.
These days - we’ve come full circle. Fiverr has emerged from the promise of early 2010’s marketplaces into a global powerhouse. As such, most of my clients are signed artists, publishing firms and record companies looking for verified professional writers.

What’s one highlight or proud moment in your Fiverr journey so far?

With Fiverr’s various levels and vetted PRO program - it’s not uncommon to write for films, albums, national ad campaigns and incredibly gifted people. What’s incredibly rare, however, is working directly with Fiverr themselves. I’ve been approached multiple times to create music for Fiverr’s internal programming and work directly with the teams spearheading those projects. In each case - they’ve been incredibly easy to work with, encouraging and extremely aware of the artistic process.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s better to advertise your actual skill level rather than to inflate your abilities for client approval. Fiverr is designed to pair buyers and sellers together in the hopes that they will add to each other’s professional credentials. These days, Fiverr gives you the opportunity to start your career, meet successful people in your vocation, learn from incredibly talented sellers and obtain professional credentials in a true fashion. Read the forum. Watch tutorials. Listen to sellers from all skill sets to find routines that you can incorporate into your own workflow. Don’t limit your research to sellers in your own vertical, learn from everyone. Use every tool that Fiverr gives you access to and invest in yourself. Find mentors and share the tips you discover along the way.
Fiverr is a journey, not a destination.

Looking ahead

Tommy’s story is a reminder of just how many paths there are to success, and how important it is to stay adaptable, creative, and open to sharing what you’ve learned.
