From $5 gigs to $1M: Why I walked away from Disney to freelance on Fiverr
My freelancing journey started during one of the strangest chapters of my life: March 2020, when Disney closed its parks and furloughed most of its staff. At the time, I was working as a Senior Manager. Like everyone else, I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands and not a lot of clarity. While waiting to hear if we’d be called back to work, I started thinking seriously about my next move.
Helping people find direction had always been a highlight of my Disney role. One moment that really stuck with me was helping a front-line retail employee, who was studying finance, connect with a Financial Analyst on the Disney Pride Leadership team (which I was also part of). That connection led to an internship, which turned into a full-time role, and eventually led him to a job with the San Francisco 49ers. That moment sparked something in me. I realized I not only enjoyed helping people with their careers, but also that I could leverage my writing skills to do this for more people.
So, in May 2020, I opened a Fiverr account. I started with $5 services and no expectations. Slowly, people started to find me. Positive reviews trickled in. One buyer turned into two. Then ten. Then hundreds. By the time Disney called me back in March 2021, I was faced with a choice. Return to my job or bet on myself. I’ll never forget my boss saying, “You’re coming back to work!” And I’ll never forget hesitating before saying, “No, I’m not.” One simple “No” turned into over 7,000 “Yes’s” on Fiverr and I’ve never regretted it.
Since then, I’ve helped thousands of clients across nearly every industry and level, from CEOs to FBI agents, shrimp farmers, private detectives, mega church pastors, and even the Sugar Plum Fairy. (Yes, really.) Other highlights include guiding federal employees as they transition into private-sector roles, helping entry-level tech professionals break into the cybersecurity space, and partnering with C-suite leaders faced with navigating their organizations through reductions in force, launching innovation labs, or even scaling startups that are actively changing the world. (One was for a flying car!)
I’ve also supported dozens of people in retail, food service, and front-line roles as they transitioned into 9-to-5 office jobs, often with benefits and salary bumps. Most recently, I helped a new accounting grad land her first corporate job with Sheraton.
Resume writing is all about permission. The permission to tell a client’s story without apologizing for it. Every resume I write is designed to reflect what’s already true. That they’re qualified, valuable, and ready for more. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about freelancing on Fiverr, it’s this: your deliverable is not your product. The outcome is. My day-to-day may be to write resumes, but its ultimately about helping people believe in what they’re capable of.
To the U.S. Club and broader Fiverr team, thank you for creating a space where freelancers can thrive and grow. I’m honored to be featured, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of growth and success not only for me, but for freelancers both seasoned and new across all parts of the world. I used to help people build careers inside a company. Now, I help them build careers on their own terms. That’s the power of freelancing on Fiverr, and I’m just getting started.
