Let's talk keywords: The optimization strategies every Fiverr freelancer should know
When it comes to securing more orders, maximizing your visibility is crucial. After all, it’s impossible for clients to hire you if they don’t even know your services exist, right?
So, the question becomes: how do you ensure that the algorithm is consistently placing your Gigs in front of relevant clients who are looking for what you offer in such a competitive marketplace? Well, while the algorithm is a complex system that considers various factors, a huge part of that answer lies in what keywords you’re using.

Keywords and the algorithm

Your keywords help feed the algorithm with insights about your Gigs so it can accurately understand what you’re offering and which buyer inquiries are most relevant. When a buyer enters a search query, the algorithm first scans Gig titles to find relevant offerings. Then, it scans tags to gain a better understanding of each Gig, enabling it to display the most relevant options to clients based on their search criteria.

Finding the right keywords for you

Understanding this, you can see why choosing the right keywords can be the difference between getting good impressions and having your Gig fade into oblivion with buyers.
If you’re in Seller Plus and need help selecting the right keywords for your Gigs, simply use the Keyword Research tool found in Advanced Analytics. This tool provides a general overview of all the highest-performing keywords so that you can compare your Gig’s existing keywords with new options, find the best ones when creating a new Gig or exploring new domains, and discover top-performing keywords in your current category.
If you’re not a Seller Plus member and don’t have access to the Keyword Research tool, no worries! You can still make informed decisions about your keywords through some market research. To start, use the search box to type out your service or subcategory. As you type, you’ll notice suggestions begin to auto-populate. These are typically the most popular searches related to your query and can be a great source of keyword inspiration.

Alternatively, you can click into your relevant subcategory to see the keywords used by successful sellers who consistently receive orders and reviews.

Using your keywords effectively

Once you've identified suitable keywords relevant to what you offer and what buyers are searching for, it's time to incorporate them into your Gig. Remember, the algorithm looks for keywords in two main places: your title and your tags.
For your Gig title, use the strongest keywords that best explain your service and have strong marketplace demand. While keywords communicate with the algorithm, they should also clearly convey your offer to potential customers. In other words, ensure your title reads naturally. Also, avoid keyword stuffing, that is, inserting too many keywords into your Gig without considering grammar and flow. This can make your title sound awkward and unappealing, ultimately hurting your clicks and conversions.
For your tags, choose keywords that complement your title and gives the algorithm more context about your services.
For example, If your title is: “I will set up Facebook and Instagram ads campaign for your business”
Your tags might be: facebook marketing, facebook ads, fb ads campaign, meta ads manager, meta ads
The trick is not to repeat the same keywords in your tags that you used in your title. It won’t necessarily hurt you if you do, but you could be missing out on valuable reach. In the example above, the freelancer has a chance of being shown in searches whether a client types in “set up Facebook ads,” “Instagram ads,” “Meta ads,” or any of the other relevant phrases. On the contrary, if the same keywords were used in both the title and tags, visibility would be limited to those specific searches, leading to fewer impressions overall.

Editing your keywords

The marketplace, along with trends and demand, constantly evolves, so keywords aren’t a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. If you have access to the Seller Plus Top Keyword tool, review your keywords at least once a month to evaluate their performance and see if any need refreshing. Alternatively, you can manually track your impressions to see if they remain steady, with notable dips possibly signalling that it’s time for an update.

Wrapping it up

Keywords may seem like a small detail, but they play a big role in helping your Gigs get noticed. A thoughtful keyword strategy helps you stay visible, relevant, and competitive: three essentials for long-term success on Fiverr. Take the time to refine, test, and refresh your keywords regularly, and you’ll be setting your Gigs up for stronger impressions, higher visibility, and more orders over time.
