The Fiverr strategies that worked in the past won't work today. Here's what will
Over the last few years, I've noticed something interesting. The freelancers struggling the most on Fiverr aren't always the newest ones. Sometimes, they're the experienced ones who found success in the past but are having trouble replicating those same results today.
That's because the marketplace that existed three or four years ago isn't the same marketplace that exists today. The old handbooks on how to succeed on Fiverr are growing more obsolete as the rules continue to change. While that reality can be frustrating, it also creates tremendous opportunities for freelancers who understand how to adapt.
In this article, I want to walk through some of the biggest shifts I've seen on the platform and what they mean for freelancers today. The freelancers who thrive in this new environment are no longer the ones competing solely on volume and low prices. They're the ones positioning themselves as trusted experts and strategic partners, focusing on delivering exceptional outcomes and creating experiences that keep clients coming back.

What the old marketplace looked like vs. what it's like today

A few years ago, success on Fiverr was largely about volume. To win, it was all about offering basic services at a very competitive price and delivering quickly. To be honest, it wasn't always about which freelancer was the most skilled. Instead, it often came down to who was the fastest and the cheapest.
That model worked well for a while until something changed. Today, AI tools can easily create a decent logo, write basic content, or perform simple tasks in seconds, for free. As a result, clients looking for cheap and fast are no longer coming to Fiverr. They have AI for that. Now, they're coming here for what AI can't deliver. That is: real expertise, real strategy, and real outcomes for their business. The best part is they're willing to pay top dollar for it.
We're seeing this reflected across the marketplace. Average order values are significantly higher than they were a few years ago. There are fewer low-cost, one-off transactions and a lot more investment in comprehensive, high-value projects.

What this means for you

Naturally, with such significant changes affecting the marketplace, you'll likely see their effects reflected in declining metrics such as impressions and conversions. When this happens and you're not getting the kinds of results you used to, it can be tempting to focus on tweaking keywords, rewriting titles, or making small profile optimizations. While those elements still matter, they aren't nearly as influential as they once were.
If your Gig isn't getting impressions despite having strong keywords, or it's getting traffic but not converting, your keywords are probably not the root issue.
The algorithm today is built on much more than keywords. It's designed to match competent professionals who are likely to deliver high-quality results with the clients looking for them. What moves the needle now isn't having great keywords; it's having strong client satisfaction signals, strategic pricing, and an offer that aligns with the solutions that clients are actually looking for.
If those things aren't in place, no keyword strategy will fix your declining metrics. So instead of spending your energy trying to optimize for keywords, I recommend you do the following instead:

3 Freelancing Strategies That Actually Work in 2026

Think like a strategic partner, not a service provider

One of the biggest shifts happening right now is in client expectations. Clients aren't just coming to Fiverr for one-and-done services. Instead of a simple logo, they want full-scale branding that tells a story and resonates with their target audience. Instead of a simple website, they want to hire someone who can create a high-converting site that drives sales, and who also thinks about SEO, the user experience, and what happens after launch.
Take a look at your Gigs. How could you repackage your expertise in a way to add more value and solve for more than just the basics? What could you offer as an upsell or a natural next step for your clients? This shift may require upskilling, restructuring your packages, or repositioning your offerings.

Increase your prices (and skills if necessary)

Clients come here for experts they trust to handle tasks that AI can't perfect, and they're prepared to pay premium prices for the right individual. When they land on your profile and see a $5 service, many of them may assume they're looking at a beginner rather than a specialist, which can cause you to lose the client.
My advice is to ditch the bottom-of-the-barrel pricing strategy. It just doesn't work anymore. Plus, charging rock-bottom prices can:
  • Lead to quick burnout
  • Fail to deliver the financial results you're aiming for
  • Hurt your standing with the algorithm
I'd much rather you go for one $500 order than try to chase a hundred $5 ones. That doesn't mean every freelancer should increase their prices tomorrow. You shouldn't charge expert rates if you're a beginner, so when raising your prices, make sure you're also increasing your value.
Be honest with yourself: could what you're doing now be easily copied by AI? If yes, that's a sign to keep improving. You want to reach a level where you're highly skilled at offering comprehensive solutions for your clients, including strategy, expertise, and the complementary services around it.

Focus on quality, not quantity

In this new market, it may seem like your order volume is going down, but that's not always a bad thing. Now the quality of your orders matters far more than the quantity. One order where you deliver exceptional work, communicate well throughout, and leave the client genuinely satisfied is worth more than ten where you got the job done but the experience was full of conflicts.
Take the drop in volume as an opportunity to take your time with clients, making sure you're building professional rapport with them, learning more about their goals, and also delivering exceptional work. Happy clients come back, leave strong reviews, tips, and the algorithm notices all of this in your favor, far more than the perfect keywords and high volume ever will.

What I'd tell any freelancer right now

After years of working with freelancers across dozens of categories, here's what I keep coming back to: the freelancers positioned well right now are the ones who have stopped taking a factory-like approach to their orders. Instead of prioritizing volume, speed, and low pricing, they focus on genuine expertise, a commitment to continuous growth, and a dedication to helping clients succeed.
For those freelancers, the changes happening in the marketplace aren't something to fear. There has never been a better time to stand out.
