How AI gave me a chance to reinvent myself and build a family business

I traded backend code for creative freedom, and built a thriving AI business along the way.

Up until 2021, my world was entirely driven by logic. As a trained computer scientist, I spent my days staring at brackets, debugging syntax, and building backend architecture. It was stable and paid the bills, but it eventually felt limiting due to its repetitive nature. I was hungry for real creativity, visual storytelling, and a career that moved at my own pace.
Then the pandemic struck. While the world outside slowed down, I decided to focus on my dormant Fiverr account. As a coder, my profile was naturally oriented towards web development and design at the time, but this was also around the same time that the first waves of generative AI hit the tech space. My inner developer instantly collided with my craving for creative expression, and I jumped into learning the world of AI art.
The early bet that helped me grow in a new niche
In the beginning, AI art wasn't the one-click wonder people use today. This was the early, unpolished days of Stable Diffusion, PikaLabs, and Kling.
PROMPT: "A detailed portrait..." → RESULT: A distorted face with three arms and seven fingers.
You couldn't just type a poetic sentence and get something usable. You had to go under the hood to tweak CFG scales, wait out 50 to 100 sampling steps for a single render, carefully balance denoising strength, and train LoRAs and custom models to keep the style consistent.
It was a lot, but going from writing backend code to realizing I could embed AI-generated visuals, videos, and animations directly into my web development pushed my creative freedom to a whole new level. It got even better once I discovered Midjourney through Discord. Typing into a chat room and watching images form in real time felt like touching the future.
My greatest edge was that intense period of trial and error. While some walked away out of frustration with the early tools, my engineering mind saw it as a beautiful puzzle. Instead of just learning to prompt, I learned how to understand the machine and direct it until it produced exactly what I envisioned.
That process took me from a standard web developer to a multimedia AI developer who could combine coding, spatial design, and a wide range of AI capabilities, including cinematic generative video, realistic speaking avatars, custom imagery, and original AI music.
How my brother joined the business with zero AI experience
Naturally, demand for my skills went up and my inbox went into absolute overdrive. I was reaching a worldwide audience of a size I had never imagined.
The only problem was that I was managing everything from coding, prompt engineering, editing, audio production, and account management for global clients across all time zones, 24/7. I pulled countless all-nighters and worked past my limits just to keep up. If I wanted to maintain quality, deliver the striking results my clients relied on, and scale the business, I couldn’t keep going alone. I knew I needed someone with the same work ethic and vision. That was the exact moment I brought my brother on board.
Calling him in quickly allowed me to go from an exhausted solo freelancer to part of an agile, unstoppable team. He was living a completely different life at the time, working full-time as a mechanic. But seeing the opportunity ahead, he made one of the biggest decisions of his life and left his job to jump into this journey with me.
He didn't come from a creative agency or a tech company, and he had no experience in AI, filmmaking, or design. What he did have was an incredible work ethic and a determination to learn everything from scratch. Every day, he immersed himself in AI tools, video production, visual storytelling, and creative workflows, spending countless hours mastering a brand-new industry.
6 tips for freelancing in the AI creative space
Now, three years later, we run our creative studio together as a family business, strengthened by our completely different backgrounds: my computer science and software development on one side, his practical, hands-on problem-solving on the other. Together, we've delivered over 1,000 projects for clients around the world, and the demand continues to grow.
Through the chaotic grind of scaling this business, we developed our ultimate playbook for freelance artists and creators navigating the AI space:
- Lock down the details first: clients will want revisions. It is rare that someone accepts the first render right out of the gate. AI video depends on voiceovers, visual style, aspect ratios, and frame rates (FPS). Before you generate a single frame, extract every single piece of information to minimize what’ll eventually need to be changed.
- Always send a sample: Many clients don't fully understand the technical boundaries and limitations of AI yet. To protect yourself and manage expectations, always send a quick sample based on their script before committing to the full project.
- Never rely on one tool: There is no universal tool that can handle everything. To cover diverse demands, stack multiple platforms. In our studio, we use at least five different tools simultaneously. Currently, platforms like Seedance 2.5, Kling, and Google Omni lead the frontier, but you must know when to deploy each.
- Bridge the gap with traditional software: Simply generating raw videos is no longer enough. You must master industry-standard editing software like DaVinci Resolve or Filmora. The true magic happens when you combine traditional post-production, color grading, and sound design with cutting-edge AI.
- Know your value: Just because anyone can type a prompt into an AI generator does not mean the output will be good. Delivering high-end, premium quality costs massive amounts of time, rendering credits, and years of technical expertise. Charge accordingly and respect your craft.
- Let originality do the heavy lifting. When you're not backed by a multi-million dollar agency, your work has to be more original, more emotional, more striking than everything else. You can't hide behind a legacy brand name; your portfolio has to connect with people every single day.
You can build the life you dream of
Technology is not just a tool to help you build projects, if used strategically, it can also help you build the life you only dreamed of.
Three years ago, I was a computer scientist who thought my career had hit a ceiling. Today, my brother and I run a studio built on tools that didn't exist a few years ago. None of it happened because we had the perfect background or a lucky break. It happened because we were willing to choose to reinvent and take the leap of faith.
Our story shows that you don't need a conventional background to build something extraordinary. It is entirely possible to reinvent yourself as long as you are willing to learn, embrace change, and put in the work. The tools will keep changing, faster than any of us can fully keep up with. What doesn't change is the willingness to learn something from scratch, to bring in the right person at the right moment, and to put your own voice and heart into every project you touch.
