  1. @courtellyn I ended up revising the description of my gig to be very specific. I added in a brief line of the writing/editing/publishing process and where proofreading falls in that process, as well as encourage buyers to contact me prior to ordering if they are at all unsure. And when a buyer messages me first, I make sure to ask where they are in the process and if they’ve worked with an editor yet. If they haven’t, I strongly advise them to do that first. Another thing that has helped is stating that when it comes to tense, I’ll fix the first 10 instances and after that, I will note it for the buyer to fix. I’ve found that when tense is the error, I end up having to re-write the content surrounding the tense errors. That’s a slippery slope that ends up with me doing line editing for the cost and time frame of a proofreading. Since revising, the quality of the pieces I’ve gotten has definitely gone up.
  2. I offer proofreading services for romance novels. I have a buyer who has submitted an order for her book that takes place during the Civil War. It’s my own opinion that if a writer is going to include characters such as enslaved people, they need to approach those characters, storylines, dialogue, etc. with sensitivity and historical accuracy. As I get further into this book, that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Would I be out of line by canceling the order and recommending the author work with a content editor who specializes in historical fiction.
  3. I'm having an issue with a repeat buyer, in which she placed an order, I completed the order, she accepted the order, left a 5-star review and placed additional orders, which have been completed, accepted and reviewed at high levels. Now, two months later, she is contacting me to let me know that she has questions about my work and would like revisions. She has not officially requested revisions, but she has messaged me to let me know they are coming. When I created the gig, I did not include revisions. Is this a thing buyers can do? Am I obligated to provide revisions, more than two months after she accepted, reviewed, and the order was marked as complete?
  4. I think so…I didn’t change the font from the document she sent me…
  5. I have a buyer disputing an order because the edits I made (via Track Changes in MS Word) are showing erroneously on her end. For example, I changed a word from capitalized to lowercase. On her end, it shows as the first letter being deleted altogether, while on my end, it shows the edited word. I have no idea how to proceed with this, because I did the work correctly and delivered it early, but she isn't seeing that work. Any ideas or advice?
  6. My gig is for proofreading/light copy editing romance novels and it’s been going well; however, it’s happened a few times that I’ve received a manuscript that is just so poorly written that I almost can’t proofread it. These are manuscripts that likely need some serious content editing, which is not a service I offer. Any suggestions on how to handle this sort of thing? Can I request a sample of the manuscript and then accept or decline an order based on that?
