What do you think of sellers quoting very low prices for huge work?

I too am a new Seller who’s offering much more work for much lower prices, but I figure that’s the route I need to take for now if I want to level up. I’ve so far had only two orders - 1/wk - with one for $5 and one for $10. I put in at least three hrs’ worth of work for each of them and did MUCH more than was necessary. They were both audio gigs which COULD have only taken 5 minutes to complete, but being the perfectionist I am, I did each recording at least 5x because I wasn’t going to deliver anything but the best (heck, I used to take an HOUR to do my answering machine greeting because I wanted it “just so” and I still do no less than 5 takes when I do my voicemail message on a new phone) and then, even though it wasn’t required, I also edited the audio for background noise, pauses, etc. Again, because I wanted to put my beyond-best foot forward for my first gigs.

So no, cheap does NOT always mean “bad quality”’; in some cases, like my own, cheap means, “I’m trying to get my foot in the door into a room where there are already dozens of others doing what I do, others who already have higher levels and return buyers and more feedback, so I HAVE to stand out somehow.” THAT is why I offer 3 mins’ worth of audio for only $5 vs. the 30 secs for $5 I’ve seen elsewhere. Us newbies need to get an edge somehow!

To add to your great comment; I understand that a buyer may feel that there are so many talented people out there that it just takes finding the right person who has the combination of great skills and desperation. And, maybe that does happen. But more often than not a buyer will get someone who does not have the skills or simply does not have the experience to fully understand what they’re getting themselves into.

Well put. There’s certainly guesswork involved in assessing a seller and the fees are a huge part of that. Low fees make me skeptical work would be of quality. Speaking as a seller, it may appear that the work would take longer than it does, but I have a system and experience that makes high quality for a low price entirely plausible. It’s hard to say if/when gig price reflects quality. I’d say your best bet is to look for transparency and credibility through their Fiverr activity and off the platform, too, if possible.

Interesting: something buyers should consider, for sure.

Thank you! So now it’s about a month later and I made Level One last week. In looking back, most of my Sales have been for my middle package, so now that I’ve leveled up, I could perhaps raise my prices a tad; I don’t think I can raise the lowest one just yet, but the other two may get raised by $5 and then we’ll see. I’d rather do it slowly little-by-little than suddenly raise my prices by a mile. I still have Level Two to obtain!

Well I’m a new seller and I’m currently looking for reviews than money. So, I can even work for 1$ but Fiverr minimum limit is 5$! I hope you understand what I’m saying.

I totally understand. But the site IS called Fiverr, so buyers come here expecting to pay at LEAST $5, so that price is certainly not a turn-off.

I think there is a reason for bid at very low cost and this is very disappointing situation because some seller's are new on fiverr so they want more attraction of buyers so that they do something. Fiverr should do something for his new customers to getting order's then the market rate is at the same. Please visit my link thanks: https://www.fiverr.com/hamzakhan786

I think this is the way to go. I have been adjusting my prices gradually such that even my repeat clients take some time to notice. But once they do, they never stop ordering.

Yeah I think so but If you are level 2 seller your order’s never stop because your work’s should tell that you deserve the amount you want.

If you’re looking for more reviews, try doing lot’s of work cheaply. That’s how all of us started.

It’s all so tricky. I deliver quality work at rock bottom prices because reviews are more important to me right now. But on the flip side, low prices may look as if you also produce low quality work. That thinking will cause buyers with that mindset to stay away. The fact that I’ve been able to make it to level one shows me that there are those who will take the chance. Thankfully my reviews have been really good so I hope to be able to move away from that model soon.

I had a message from a buyer who wanted a sci-fi novel translated to English - approx 200,000 words and told me that I needed to beat the current best price which was $750. I told him that my minimum would be more than double that and that I also need to see the book first which he would not do.

So some idiot has made an offer of approx 90% less than the going rate for translation and has not even seen the book. I suspect they have not done much translating before. I also suspect we will see the buyer on the forum complaining at some point. I pointed out to the buyer that the rate he was suggesting I beat is lower than minimum wage in any English speaking country and wished him good luck. This is not being a little cheaper than the going rate, this is less than half the cheap Fiverr rate - roughly $3/1000 words after fees - outside of Fiverr this would be in the region of $30/1000 words, a total of approx $6000.

The person who gets that job will be delighted that they have a huge order but then one of two things will happen: 1. the seller will realize that the $600 they earn is nowhere near worth the amount of time they are spending on it and try to cancel (or else just exhaust themselves), or 2. the seller will send an awful translation and the buyer will cancel/complain to CS/chargeback.

Honestly, I do not understand how some people are in business, this guy was quoted a price and didn’t stop to think about whether it could be possible for someone to work for 90% less than the going rate but instead he continued asking other people to try get a CHEAPER rate!

I so agree. While I offer rock bottom prices right now because I need to compete. I have turned down work that just blatantly crosses the line between the amount of work needed to complete the task compared with the price offered.

I fully understand offering low low prices in the beginning, its probably how most people get started and establish credibility. However, as you say, there are limits. Doing 30 mins work for the price of 10 mins is normal in the beginning, as the review is more valuable than the money but nobody is going to do 3 weeks work for the price of 1 week just to get a review!

Glad to see you got your Lev 1 badge!

Some people do not possess the necessary budget to negotiate with the high bidders, and that is where the lenghty-gig for a low-price type of sellers come into the picture. Besides, it is a free network where each and every persona has the power to impose his/her own price.

Nevertheless, even I had a destitute budget and referred to such sellers as you deem “desperate”, for which I received a rather satisfying service. Remember, it is a competition and being humble will not yield any profit, by all means, you should avoid being egoistic, but ‘showing-out’, and thinking outside of the box is extremely important in the business world.

I think SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE! I’m curious! I came to this site as a new user simply look g to have a logo made because I didn’t have time to do it myself. I posted what I needed and was contacted by a plethora of “SO CALLED graphic artists” after waiting for an insane time to get the work done properly I ended up doing it MYSELF! Mind you after hiring 3 different people to do it! These guys had NO EXPERIENCE as a graphic designers! Heck one guy sent me back a variation of the rough SKETCH that I sent him to show what I wanted… I thought Omg is this a joke? But as a new user I don’t know… these are the people that contacted me! Said they could do it, they were professionals! They all had low offers and I thought wow these are not what I thought to pay but… ok! I’ll pay more if I like it. I was getting bids from 5 to 20.00 I said I don’t want the 5.00 ones they are to cheep must be a reason… so went with the 20.00 bids. NOW that I waisted ALOT of time and wayyyy behind schedule I obviously have cancled the offers and got my money back but I WANT TO LEAVE REAL FEEDBACK on there portfolio. How do I do that? There is no way these guys are real graphic artists, I think their feedback is fake Nd there pictures of work done is fake. Because I was bombarded by them when I posted my job I lost out on finding a REAL designer, lost a lot o time, and ended up doing it myself… which looks amazing BTW. I’m so annoyed with Fibers and WILL talk about my experience on my podcast so others know too!

Sorry you’ve had such a bad experience,

As you’ve had a refund, you can’t leave feedback I’m afraid.

Hey I’m not coming AT YOU directly at all not sure what makes you think otherwise I’m simply stating my thoughts on how this is WRONG! TOS? Like I’m really thinking about the terms of service! Im pretty sure what I experienced isn’t in the terms of service as it is experienced. I don’t need a legal reason as to why I’m pissed or was given terrible experience. Fiverr makes it impossible to leave bad feedback so there isn’t a buyer beware… I have no problem spreading the word and letting people know my experience.

If you stopped with the capital letters a bit it would really help.

Surely you would read the terms of service of any website before you start spending your money.

That must have been a very bad experience, but it is one of the risks of hiring seller through buyer requests. You are highly certain to find novice sellers with little experience and are looking for reviews hence the reason for low pricing. I think the best way to reduce the risks of hiring a seller who will do shoddy work is to use Fiverr search results for the services you want. As a seller when I get an order through Fiverr organic search results, I tend to do it extremely well because I can understand the efforts the buyer took to choose me in the a sea of sellers with similar services.

Buyers who request services through Fiverrr search will most likely receive better services because they can communicate with the seller and see if they’re a match prior to placing the order. Again the order is buyer initiated and not seller initiated as in BR.

Happy selling!
