Oh Boy! What Have I Done?

Earlier today a buyer requested my email address and I told him sure here is it (and I foolishly gave him). Now the next minute I noticed my message was flagged for review. Then it hit me that I have violated ToS. For a second there I thought I was on Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp and acted on impulse. I felt so bad about it that I deleted the whole message thread. Sincerely there are several times when buyers have requested we work outside Fiverr or Pay me outside Fiverr but I blatantly refused. Today I just acted on impulse. It even took me until the warning to realize what I was doing. Usually during orders, I provide buyers with a username (which is an email) and password in order to log in to a software program but that’s part of the job - the system ignores that. But maaaaan. This was different. I screwed up.

I finally resorted to one thing - Report myself to Fiverr. I sent a message to Support and explained what happened and pleaded for another chance. It’s just one of those days with a lot on my mind and really don’t want to mess up this golden opportunity. Hopefully they will understand me and not take any rash action (like banning my account).

I may not know the outcome. I am prepared for the worse even if I’m hoping the outcome would be in my favor, but I think this could be a lesson to Sellers out there. If you mess up in any way I think it’s best if you present your case before thinks fall apart against you.

Thank you.

This is the message I got back

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for contacting us about this. No problem 🙂

Note that it is against our Terms of Services to provide or request contact information from other Fiverr users.

To protect our users’ privacy, user identities are kept anonymous. Requesting or providing Email addresses, s***e/IM usernames, telephone numbers or any other personal contact details to communicate outside of Fiverr in order to circumvent or abuse the Fiverr messaging system or Fiverr platform is not permitted.

Any necessary exchange of personal information required to continue a service may be exchanged within the order page.

According to this, my advise is to refrain from sharing such information via regular message but to do it only and only via the order page and order messages. When sharing such information via order page, it’s good to briefly explain why.

Hope this was helpful.

Let us know if you need any further assistance !

I get a lot of requests for other contact means than Fiverr, not to order outside Fiverr but to communicate better about the job. I’m starting to build legitimate gigs to cover it. Giving an email without thinking in messages does sound impossible though.

This is something for sellers to note though that Fiverr have been flagging a lot more for review lately.

I do a lot of financial gigs and words to do with payment come up regularly in pre-gig messaging as well as conversations about legitimate ways to communicate off Fiverr to narrow down the requirements. My gigs have started getting flagged a lot and it’s never happened before.

I get a lot of messages asking for contact outside Fiverr. I just wish it happened as often on OkCupid where I could actually entertain the thought.

I understand quite well how such things can happen, I´m a bit scatterbrained, I’ve been doing things like really honestly simply forget to buy a subway ticket when I was tired or distracted, because I was used to having a monthly ticket from some time earlier. And I mean, it´s not really the most intuitive or instinctive thing to not give someone your e-mail maybe. Shouldn´t happen, but can happen.
Great it went well in this instance. 🙂
