Why can't I access my conversations?

Check out attached image of my screen. The notifications and conversation buttons are blacked out.

Mine looks very similar if I have nothing new, especially if my brightness/contrast settings are different. Try clicking on the symbols even though they look grey and make sure they are really not working.

I have 3 pink balls for dashboard, notifications and inbox and they never go away.
