Bad week

Is this a rant? A search for solidarity? A self-pity party? Who knows.

Basically I’ve had a cr*p Fiverr week.

Firstly someone who ordered a $5 gig that I delivered a month ago only left a 4-star review. I remember them. They didn’t really know what they wanted and it took me longer to work it out than doing the gig.

Then a customer ordered a $5 gig. Technically what they wanted fell in the gig description so I delivered even though what they wanted was complicated and took several hours. During that gig I sent them a custom extra for a new requirement they threw in. They decided to wait until they saw the result of the first gig. They were very happy with the first gig so then they accepted the custom extra in the gig. Which had a 0 extra days to deliver. Which made the gig late. Doh!

I have one gig I’m doing over 2 weeks. It’s hard enough as it is in Excel, but it turns out that they’re using some ancient version of Excel - Excel 1800 or something. I have to rewrite everything to run on their version. Twice, because I can’t get it to work. I deliver just over a day late. And I’m pretty sure the thing won’t work as I haven’t had time to test it. Probably a 50/50 chance of a bad review / cancellation.

Then a customer who messaged about a large order accepted the offer straight away. Like, they NEVER do that. What happened to my (almost) guaranteed 2 weeks of negotiation grace time before the order starts? Presumably while they try and find someone else stupid enough to do what they want for the price.

Anyway, despite mixed opinions on the forum as to the value of vacation mode, I have gone on vacation mode. Partly because I am actually going away this weekend to Sydney to see my hero, Misha Collins (I named my first baby alpaca after him, after all), but mostly because this week has been a lesson. In truth, things have been building up to this ‘perfect storm’. I will come back next week with refreshed gigs and a refreshed mind.

Yeah, I think quite a few people had a nightmare week last week. It happens. Very, very demoralizing when it does but there’s not much you can do except get on with it. Regarding ancient versions of Excel (is it a difference in code rather than formatting options?), you could specify on your gig description that you will only work on Excel docs from xyz version upwards.

Enjoy the vacation–you’ve earned it! I do live in Greece so I am literally living in a vacation, but it would be nice to get away and see something different. Maybe in July…

The difference in Excel is code and formulas - MS have added a lot of things to make life easier over the years. That’s one of my gig refresh things - I’m only going to guarantee it for a certain version. You live and learn. I do need the few days break though to sort the gigs out and do other things. To be honest I didn’t expect to be getting more than a small gig or two a day at most when I joined Fiverr so I haven’t really had brain time to think about a change of tactics.
You should come to NZ for a break - it couldn’t be much further away from the Greek life!

I do have quite a few friends in Aus/NZ (UK migrants, random people I meet here) so a trip down under is definitely on the cards at a random point in the future. This July though, it’s probably going to be somewhere nearby. Egypt looks like it might be quite good, apart from all the planes and terror. Also, just about everyone who has gone has hated the sexpesty behavior of the men.

But still. Pyramids! Mummies! Camel rides! Nile cruises! A dearth of other tourists! Disgustingly hot weather!

Be careful in Egypt, especially if you are going alone. I loved it even though we were there on the first anniversary of the so-called revolution. However, the hustlers just do not leave you alone. (Egypt has nothing on places like Thailand).

Hi, by the way Cq, have you tried using a free office program like wps, open office or libre office to open and save your dodgy excel file. I’m a linux user and I’m not sure if it’s the same on Windows but when I use these I can open docs and the like in one MS format and save them in another older format. No promises it will work but it might be an idea to try.

Yeah, I’m just doing the whole travelporn research thing at the moment. I really don’t like the heat so this is unlikely to happen.

Maybe Romania? Or Ukraine to take in the views of enormous statues. I’m basically probably not going to go anywhere because I can’t decide where to go because there’s so much to see and do. Georgia looks good too, as does the trans-siberian (chinese line as I want to see the dwarf circus/village if I do that)

What is Malta like for tourism? I don’t like the beach. I like museums and nightlife, plus the language is weird there.

Thanks for the idea. I can save it in the older format but the newer features, formulas and code statements won’t save in the older format if they weren’t around then, which means they just won’t work. I have to try and remember how to get the same outcome in the older versions.
Not from next week though. Only guaranteed for Excel 2013 from next week 🙂

I knew that sounded creepy that´s why I wrote ˝I don´t mean to sound creepy˝. So, whatever, it´s not like I will/can really do it anyway. I am not a dog (although I wish I were) and I don´t know her and she doesn´t know me. I also didn´t have any bad intention by saying that. I was just playing.
