Are you online, but you aren't?

Ever looked at your profile, and it says you’re online? Has this ever happened when you aren’t?

It could be that someone else has your password.

Or it could be that you forgot to click “Log out.” It appears that the online indicator is not tied to the actual login session. It is tied to some sort of flag that is set by the log in and log out actions.

For instance, if you forget (like I did) and close the window, and then clear your active logins in your browser (I clear everything but the browsing history regularly), you won’t be logged in. But neither did you click “log out,” so the online indicator is still active.

As a side note, it’s probably a good thing that the online indicator is not tied to your actual login session, for security purposes.
