You had a bad experience, it means nothing. 500 other people had a great experience. Reviews mean everything, he did not pay for those 500 reviews, he earned them.

Besides, everyone gets a bad review eventually, some buyers don’t know how to request a cancellation, others refuse to do it. If he was so bad, his rating would be in something like 50%, which means nobody would order from him.

Fiverr and its sellers are kinda of a scam, I’ve been tricked arround here for a couple of times with shitty products, too expensive and meaningless. They don’t have a page for complains or something like this if everything goes wrong and this means scam by my standards !!!

i am new to fiverr and just had my first order (some help with wordpress) completed. my question is whether giving less than 5-star ratings across the board is unfair to a seller.
overall, the experience was positive. i had one minor issue with the seller, which was that i had asked for help with one specific aspect of the site. he told me that what i asked for, although simple, was undoable due to a bug on wp’s end. i told him, politely, that i didn’t see how that could be true and wasn’t satisfied with that response. he then almost immediately did what i had asked, which suggests to me that he was aware of how to do but didn’t want to do that additional work.
i gave him 5-star ratings for communication and accuracy. i gave him 3 stars re: whether i’d recommend him. i don’t know that i would b/c i do think he was untruthful. he’s asked me to change my rating. i would like an opinion (or 3) on what i should do. if it seems like i’m being harsh, i’m happy to adjust my ratings. like i said, i’m new to the site and am a fan of it.

thanks in advance!

It can sometimes be narrowed down to the reviews and instructions only… Even if at times the buyer is polite and diligent, there may be sellers who get irritated if you order something improperly (not utilizing extras or messaging first if you have a convoluted request, and order something simple). Not all sellers are professional enough to handle these patiently and properly, as at times they ask in their description to message first under certain circumstances, and buyers at times ignore and order.

I have encountered a bad seller that has many positive reviews. He has positive reviews because he offers a free gig when you leave a positive review. This gig was for an SEO service. He placed backlinks on fake blogs that were written in random sentences. I am afraid of backlash if I leave a negative review, but my concern is other people purchasing from this ‘reputable’ seller and he just continues doing it. I doubt that most people read the documents that come with the delivered gig; that’s why we’re there in the first place: we don’t understand backlinks and SEOs. Any advice? Any way to report a seller?

OR!
500 people did not know the translation they got done was bad. If everyone who complained got a cancellation then there would be no negative reviews. Obviously this applies only to translation gigs where the buyers may not know whether the work is good or bad.

To say all Fiverr sellers are a scam is simply not true. I’m sure there are dishonest sellers, the same as everywhere but my experience has been over 90% positive.
Fiverr do have a very helpful customer service which is available for complaints and also a cancellation feature which a buyer can instigate if they are unhappy. Your standards would be correct but they do not apply to Fiverr as it has what you say it doesn’t.

You are free to rate however you see fit but as you got the work done correctly I would think you should give 5 stars. You don’t know whether he knew what to do or if he had to find out what to do. You think he was untruthful but he could also have gone out of his way to find a solution for you. The fact it was done well in the end would lead me to suggest 5 stars would be fair. 5 star ratings are very important here, especially if the seller is new or has a small number of ratings.

I think reviews should be based on work carried out alone. Giving a positive review to get something free is manipulative. I sometimes include an offer of discount for repeat orders but it is never linked to the review I am given.
What do you mean “afraid of backlash”, do you have any reason to be afraid?

SEO work is basically a simple process (what works and doesn’t work is debatable though) and what is done should be understandable or explained to you. If you are paying a very cheap price for SEO the chances are you will not get this service from the seller but it is important to know what exactly is being done in case you need to get it undone.

Finally, I am not sure why you are saying he is a bad seller. Did he do what he offered to do? If so then you have no argument. Whether this has a positive effect on your site’s rankings is debatable as Google does not specifically say what is good, what is bad. Some SEO experts will say what you had done is good even if it is jumbled up sentences, others will say it’s bad.
With that in mind, it will be difficult to argue that they have done anything wrong and the customer support people will probably not be in a position to act if he has simply done what he said he would.

I doubt it. I’ve done a lot of translations in my career, and if something bad gets published there will be hell to pay if someone complains, and eventually someone does.

If I pay Pablo to translate 1,000 words to Spanish, I might share his work with a Latino in the office, to see if he did it right.

Now I don’t know why you got a bad translation, maybe the material you gave him was too technical. Today for example I rejected a golf translation request from Thumbtack because they want someone who plays golf and understands the sport, I don’t, and I’m not going to bother learning golf terms in Spanish. My translation experience is with finance, automotive, banking, payday loans, and tourism. I’m going to stick with what I know. Maybe your seller should have refunded the order instead of doing something beyond his capabilities.

Yes, they will complain if they realize they have got a badly done translation and he refunds them. If they don’t realize then they don’t complain.
I am a seller and translator too, I understand all of the possibilities you mention here but they don’t apply. If was a straightforward “about us” web page. Nothing technical, nothing difficult. I am not sure why you are trying so hard to defend someone you do not know and have no idea (as you say) why the translation was so bad. The reality was that it was, when I queried it he offered nothing by way of defending it, I didn’t even say just how bad it was!
I am a VERY reasonable buyer, as you will find out 🙂 and if he had offered to fix it, asked for more time or something else I would have had no issue doing so. He seems to have known/expected cancellation and had no alternative to it, like he had been found out.
Anyway, my point is that having lots of good reviews is a good way of judging a seller but it does not guarantee anything.

Well, I’m just baffled by your experience, when I have bad experiences it’s usually from level 1 sellers, not level 2’s with 500 positive reviews.

Maybe it was a rush job, maybe he didn’t revise, maybe he used an automatic translator because he was in a hurry, I do not know.

You’re right that there are no guarantees. A few days ago I had dinner at Burger King and was very disappointed. The restaurant was sloppy, the service was slow, and the food wasn’t very good. I used to love BK when I was in my 20s, used to eat there all the time. I don’t know what happened. Maybe some people get lazy after they succeed, maybe that franchisee trusts his employees too much.

I just hope you have better experiences in the future.

Maybe the older, more food conscious you now knows what having real food and proper service is like and won’t put up with that processed crap, served by careless staff like you used to.
The crap is the same but you now know the difference 😃

We’re all trading something for something else. I have chosen to work on Fiverr because it gives me more time and freedom. A man with my experience could easily make $60,000 to $70,000 a year at an ad agency. Making that kind of money means I could afford a personal trainer, vacations, maybe a nicer place to rent, perhaps the car payments on a Toyota Prius.

On the other hand, ad agencies have too much drama. A part of me is tempted to go back to that world, but what’s the point? They bitch if a make a spelling mistake, they whine if I forget their names, they complain if I’m not social, they don’t tell me what to do but expect me to know it, they want go getters, people who take the initiative, they tell me it’s a Sr. Copywriter job but then they don’t give me any juniors to manage.

Or, instead of going home at 6pm, I might have to go to a bar to brainstorm with my alcoholic boss who thinks we have nothing better to do because we’re both single.

See? This is why I’m doing things from $5. It’s so much easier and it adds up. I just hope someday it adds up to $70,000+ 😉

Sadly, some SEO people are crooks. Some are using software instead of doing the blog manually. True lnikbuilding requires going to actual blogs, relevant blogs, commenting and placing links. That’s why if I were to buy SEO linkbuilding, I would buy it from the guy that does 10 manually for $5 than the guy who claims he’s doing 100 manually. That later guy is probably lying.

All orders are paid in advance here: money is refunded upon failure to deliver/unacceptable work.

As a side note, why did you hire someone who has one 1-star review from almost 3 weeks ago for failure to deliver? Tell Customer Support if you must.

I wish all buyers would read this. You are right on the money. Act professionally, reasonably, and like you are collaborating, not dictating, threatening, and demanding, and you’ll be surprised at the incredible values you can get on fiverr. Bad buyers make bad experiences just as much as bad sellers make bad experiences.

You go to customer service to complain. And yer, it is a pain. But There are a lot of incredible sellers on this site. If someone is truly scamming you please go to customer service so that the truth can be known. Scammer make it harder for those of us who do good work.

It sounds like you are dealing with unprofessional sellers or sellers that have too much on their plate and don’t really think through the project until after they get through their other jobs. The best policy is to look at new orders, and fully get what is required as soon as they come in to make sure everything is as it should be. I understand your frustration.

This is a great approach. With large voice over projects this can be a great way to go. Split up the work and require shorter deadlines so that you have more control and can provide feedback quicker.

Posted

Great strategy. Wish more people approached this in a similar fashion as you do. The other issue I see here is most people overlook the newbies here due to the lack of a stack of reviews.

We tend to forget that Designer/Illustrator/Writer with that 97 good reviews was once undiscovered. I say don’t be scared to discover new talented people here. Connect with them, chat and get to know them better. Then you decide.

‘Writers’ point of view.

Maybe if buyers learn to consider newbies that are looking to make sales, you can tell a serious minded seller by the way his/her profile is structured… positive reviews don’t necessarily guarantee good services.
