For example there is a client who needs a logo for his real estate company. As he is looking to make a serious investment, he wants to find the best designer available. To find out who’s the best, he needs to go through many different portfolios, in hopes of finding a style that he likes.

All this sorting takes a lot of time.

But if he can just type “real estate” logo, and see examples of real estate related logos from designers portfolios. Then it would be so much faster/easier to find a seller who has already worked on similar projects.

but shouldn’t someone put that in their gig description? For most logo designers they create logos for many different types of companies. So if a seller has only one real estate logo amongst all the others, that doesn’t necessarily make them an expert logo designer for real estate. If someone specializes in design for real estate, I would think their gig says it somewhere, no?

Reply to @sincere18: Most clients want to see how the designer has approached a project that is similar to theirs, especially with higher budget projects. It’s one of the very first questions that is being asked: "Show me [real estate for example] related logos that you have worked on before."

A client who knows his market, who knows what works and what does not work, will gain a lot of valuable information even if the designer only has one real estate related logo in that portfolio. What matters, is that the client is able to see if the designer shares similar views.

Just like every creative person has his own style, every client has his own expectations. And if that client can find a designer who shares similar views, then he is also ready to pay more.

There is nothing new about searching portfolio items like that. All big freelance marketplaces have that function.
