Balancing the Buyer-Seller Relationship: A Call for Fair Internal Reviews

Question

Posted

In the gig economy and freelancing world, sellers often face challenges that go beyond delivering quality work. One of the most pressing issues is the imbalance of power when it comes to reviews, especially internal reviews that directly impact a seller's success score and reputation.

The Problem

Buyers sometimes try to take advantage of sellers by demanding additional work or revisions that go beyond the agreed-upon scope. When a seller declines such requests, the buyer may retaliate by leaving negative internal reviews. These reviews, unseen by the public but highly influential, can drastically reduce a seller's success score, leading to fewer opportunities and potential long-term damage to their profile.

This one-sided review system leaves sellers vulnerable, as they have no platform to share their perspective or defend against unfair judgments. In such cases, honest, hardworking sellers bear the brunt of the buyer's undue demands.

The Solution: A Two-Way Internal Review System

To address this issue, platforms should implement a mutual internal review system where both buyers and sellers can leave feedback about their experience. Here's how it could work:

Mutual Feedback Submission: Both parties submit internal reviews independently, ensuring neither is influenced by the other's input.

Comparison and Moderation: If discrepancies arise between the reviews, a neutral moderation team can assess the situation, reviewing communication, the scope of work, and delivery to determine fairness.

Transparent Reporting: In cases where the buyer's demands or seller's behavior is unreasonable, the platform could mediate and make informed decisions that reflect the reality of the interaction.

Why This Matters

Protecting Sellers: A two-way review system would provide sellers with an opportunity to share their side of the story, preventing undue damage to their success scores and fostering a sense of fairness.

Encouraging Accountability: Buyers would be more cautious about exploiting sellers if they knew their actions could also be reviewed internally.

Building Trust: A balanced system promotes trust between buyers and sellers, ensuring a healthier, more collaborative platform ecosystem.
