Ownership of artwork

Who owns the artwork we purchase from an artist?

i want to use the artwork in a book and want complete ownership of it so they don’t come back asking for money from book sales.

The ownership gets automatically transferred to the buyer once the order is complete and the work has been paid for. *Unless* stated otherwise in the gig description. 

You may be asked to pay an extra for commercial use or mass production. 

The idea of someone running around and following every design they sold (especially if they sell dozens a month) in hopes of getting some cash is wild to me. I don’t even remember half of the designs I did, nor do I care what happens to them once they leave my hands. But who knows how people entertain themselves these days.
