Question

Finished work with buyer 2 months ago. Accomplish delivery by approval and feedback. Now after 2 months he said he didn't get the video.

Duration of each link is 7 days and I delete the original file of each job after 15 days. It has been 2 months.

He says that he will report to me. What do I do now?

Deleting completed work is never the right way to go about jobs. You never know how/when one would need it and especially in cases like this, where your FTP link would expire in a few days.

What if the buyer had downloaded the file but they deleted it by mistake or lost it!! 🥲

Videos can take up a lot of space. It's not possible to keep them all indefinitely, nor does the buyer pay for the storage space (especially not when purchasing $5 gigs). Even Fiverr doesn't keep old deliveries forever.

Accidents happen, but isn't it the buyer's responsibility to download the file and back it up if needed?

I agree and it makes sense, most of us have only limited storage space.

But generally, I have seen all professionals keeping their work archived (for a few years at least). I have worked with big creative agencies as well as professional photographers - it was easy to find/refer to/locate old work with them. My own office laptops used to have old work saved from people (from many years), who were holding the same designation before me.

PS My own work doesn't take as much space as videos but I have had instances where buyers come back in need of the file or wanting very minor tweaks which would just take a couple of minutes.

In a way, it can also create customer delight in the long term.

Also @catwriter, I just remembered that a buyer came back after 1.5 years wanting something related to the old order. It took me a few minutes to locate the files and then I sent what she needed. To my surprise - she thanked me for not deleting the files!!

I was quite amused - why she thought that I would have deleted files?? 🙈

But it makes sense now, after reading your reply.😇 People do delete the files and move on.

I remember that @vickiespencer mentioned that she deleted files after... I don't remember how long exactly. But she does it for client confidentiality, among other reasons.

Same here, and my work are text files. And yeah, I've kept them. But I can see why someone who delivers large files would need space to create more large files.

It can. It can also make people take it for granted that by working with you, they're also getting some free storage space indefinitely. Or it can make some people feel that keeping their files indefinitely, no matter how large, is the industry standard. And some of those people turn out to be very careless with supposedly important files, and expect you to act as their backup just because they bought something from you several years ago for $5 (or $40).

So... It can get complicated. 😸

I usually keep files for about a month then I delete them. I have had buyers request I delete them for confidentiality reasons. They do not want copies of their books and the like anywhere else but in their possession.
