If an author pays a translator to translate their book

Question

Posted

Hi all, I'm just wondering, in the event of an author paying a translator to translate their children's picture book text (and a price has been agreed upon for the service):

Is the translator entitled to any royalties or copyrights?

thanks

Hi @feetdesignco

It probably depends on the specific terms negotiated between the author and the translator. If it is so-called work for hire, then maybe not. When it comes to royalties, maybe yes but that also depends on how you negotiated with the author. Copyright is a bit complicated. The author holds the original rights.

Overall, it is a complicated situation and maybe a lawyer would give you a more precise answer.
