"Unread" behavior is confusing to the user

The "notification indicator"/badge is a small pink/red dot which appears in the top right corner of the bell and message icons/widgets. For me, it is permanently read. If email notifications were turned off, I would have no idea when I was messaged:

In the messages view, sorting by "unread", I can see a conversation that ended with an accepted offer. I am not sure how to render it "Unread" to make my ribbon useful again. Knowing when artists had messaged me back was a useful feature.

I came here because I'm having the same issue. Mine does sometimes disappear if I open the inbox, but it keeps coming back when I return to my dashboard later even though there have been no new messages.
