Web Hosting

I host my platform / site with Digital Ocean. I've been with them for years and my sites never go down unless I do something stuuupid!

Not so much a "host" more cloud services and infrastructure.

A bit on the techie side for many, but they do have one click installs on droplets which allow a user to spin up a WordPress box in seconds.

You'll need to know how to work with Terminal on a Mac or PuTTy on Windows though to get the best out of it.

Just logged into DO get you a custom affiliate link that will get you $200 of credit to use with them in 60 days and saw they now do managed hosting so they might be worthwhile checking out, plus 60 days free gives you time to try before you buy and if you do buy from my link I'll get $25 on my account which will pay for my stuff with them for about six weeks.

Or, if you prefer a clean, affiliation free link:

Either way, I really like what they do, being able to spin stuff up is great, and you only pay for the hours your droplet / cloud server is online and running.

Top pro tip: enable backups, they're worth their weight in gold.

It's a shame I can't properly invite you to my platform here without breaching terms, I have been building / testing something designed for voice over artists, it makes pages, hosts demos, has a wicked demo player that embeds your artwork and contact data into downloads, and comes with a PayPal based e-commerce setup that will allow you to sell your voice, the way you want, at the price you want, without having to lose 20% commission.

I've not touched it for about nine months now as I've been letting time pass to see how it stands up. No issues yet other than the control panel being pretty advanced which takes some getting used to, it's designed to be better than WP for VO and has an equal learning curve, but it specialises in one job and does it well.

This is an example from my own site:

I can't really say any more here than it was built so talent can sell their "voiceovers direct".

I'm not ready to take on new users yet, my first account referred five others so I know when it does launch it should be pretty well received as folks are limited by WP, and the most popular demo player (ends in Zam) is a cookie dropping joke on anyone who pays for it. My platform is cookie free so there's none of that nonsense to worry about.

If you do happen to stumble upon my platform, get a "priority invitation" but ignore the pricing, it's gonna be ten bucks a month when it goes live.

Digital Ocean are a good shout @andymoorevoice   They've got a great platform

I use WPX for all of my websites.  They haven't been around long, but their customer service is amazing!  Plus if you love dogs and cats they donate a proportion of their profits to homeless animals.

This is a safe link 👇

Basically, use anyone apart from Godaddy! 😀

I'm on Bluehost but only because it had a great deal way back when I started making websites. I haven't had issues with it, but I know very little about what makes one hosting account better than any other. That's probably not helpful at all!

Do you build websites? Or do you have websites?

Both? I've never built websites for other people as part of my career. I have made quite a few for myself over the years. I'm certainly not an expert!

I have been considering getting a website to bring business to Fiverr.

Whilst I can understand the thinking behind that, I strongly suggest you get to grips with PayPal's Buy Now Buttons, when you have a grasp on how they work, they are amazing and the ROI on the time and extra skills you need to pick up is the difference in only paying PayPal's transaction fees.

2.9% plus 20 cents versus 20% more than justifies it in my mind.

WordPress plugins can sort pretty much all we'd ever need, and are more power to us.

A Stripe account might be a good idea too so you can take card payments from people over the phone.

I have been searching all the supposedly best sites. DO seems really good. I have an IMac and I am not familiar with Terminal. Can you enlighten me?

It's like a digital scalpel for performing brain surgery on a computer.

A bit like the old MS DOS stuff with raw text commands instead of a more user friendly GUI.

I think when it comes to WP, you only need to login to change the root password of the box, and whilst it's been a while I'm sure they guide you through the steps.

Luckily they've got some really awesome tutorials to guide you through the process.

All I can advise is double check a command is CHARACTER PERFECT before executing it, I once missed a dot from a command and murdered a live server that was making bank, it took me days to get things back and taught me one hell of a lesson.

It's a great power, with it comes great responsibility, backup like you're paranoid, take snapshots and you should be good to go.
