Working/editing buyers existing work.

Hi

I was wondering if it is ok to work on design project where buyer provide their design files for modification/editing. I usually do (non commercial use) agreement in such cases as it is supplied by buyer themselves not my original work. I can't verify it if they own the artwork or not. What if they are miss using editing services? and put my name on it(actually happened to me). Is unchecking (commercial use) agreement enough for such work?
