Why do the gigs's cover image display ratio changes between different places on the website?

The image is cropped for no reason. The image was created with the recommended resolution (1280x769).

Tested with Firefox and Chrome (latest versions).

Yeah, it's annoying, but that's just how it is. That's why I suggest using a safety margin adapted to the search result-version of your gig thumbnail, to make sure all the important bits are visible.

I have faced the same problem. This irritates me every time. I have to resize and change the image many times just to make sure that all of it is visible to public.

I place a strip of white space all around my image so that the empty parts are cut out.
