What changes needs to be done on character to have unique work?

Hello guys,

As I'm creating a small project for car owners, I have decided to buy a character that will be like mascot of that project.

Now, Since I've found one mascot that I really like (in Fiverr Freelancer portfolio) and because I want to have fully copyright license on it...

My questions is: What Fiverr Freelancer needs to change on that existing mascot to be able to sell me again with full copyright?

Can we just change eyes or clothing design but leave the character shape the same? Will that be unique work?

Great example of what I am thinking about can be Reddit Avatar. (check attachments)

Same shape of the character, only different eyes

Also, I need to say that 1st buyer of that character got only black and white version (like a sketch)..I've tried to remove colors via photoshop to make you more clear for understanding.

Thank you!

Uhh, using a similar image or likeness of an asset from a (major) company for your own business is a baaad idea. Disney, for instance, has a cavalcade of lawyers who are paid to crush anyone who would dare use something similar to Mickey Mouse.

And lol for wanting full copyright license for a literal non-authorized knockoff.

No, I'm not thinking on using Reddit avatar. I would never do such thing, those big corporations are just waiting for me 😄

It is just an example, to better understand my question (if modified (different eyes and clothing for eg.) sketch + colorization can be count as original work and sold with full copyright license?).

The sketch was unique but already sold to one guy via Fiverr and Freelancer sent me his portfolio where I have found that sketch and said I want this. 😄

So as I said, I would like to just modify eyes, change clothing and colorize it (all by the freelancer), if that can be count as original work and sold again by Fiverr Freelancer?!

Thanks a lot!
