Does anyone know: is this legal?

I happened to find this gig which says:

Any legal eagles out there? Is this even legal? My understanding is that unless you own the computer or have permission from the owner to use it, it is illegal to install spy software on it. I live in the U.S.



I think this is unbelievably invasive and potentially abusive and just morally reprehensible. And damn creepy.
