Opening Source File AI

I can't get my source file (ai) to open, if it opens, it showing text, or whatever unreadable letters. Seller asked me to use Adobe illustrator and I'm on the 7 day trial version. How do get to open the source file using Adobe illustrator. I just need to download and save for if need to update the logo in the future? Thanks

You can create another email id then once again you can use 7days free trial version in AI..then you can download all those file you need.

Or let someone else take your AI file and resave it for you, if you have the correct version of Illustrator.

if you save old version AI file the no problem for the latest version because still have update all feature's' into the latest version.

Can you attach a screenshot of what you see when you open it? 
 

to be honest I tell all my clients that they don’t have to open Ai file that will have no use for them. They just need to download it and keep it on their laptop and send it to people when it’s requested for printing etc
