I think, It's not important but you can do it as a new seller. I know one of the Top rated seller who never did gig marketing. If you are capable to approach the buyer by your BR then there is no need to gig marketing.

Why did you post this in “tips for buyers” category? There are no tips nor anything for buyers. Please read carefully categories that you are creating your posts in. 
 

Regarding your question: social media and marketing are important if you are trying to build your brand. 
And spamming your links on social media’s is not marketing.

If you market your gig on social media then many people visit your gig ragularly through gig links but when they don’t order you. As a result it affects your gig rank.
