Got cheated by a customer

Recommended Posts

Hello to all ,
I just got an offer from a customer regarding website automation . He wanted a bot that can give votes to his crypto currency bypassing re CAPTCHA and other things . I agreed but he requested for a demo version and said after he is satisfied that it is working he will place the order . I provided him with a bot that does the work (but being demo version I didn’t include feature like multiple votes it vote for one time only) , he was satisfied with bot and bot was doing everything he mentioned .
But he never paid for offer . He just took the demo version and left !
Is there any way to complaint about him ?

Did I made any foolish decision by providing him demo version ?

If you didn’t have an order then technically nothing to complain about.

Fiverr has rules and systems in place precisely for this things not to happen.

Next time just start all work after clients placed an order and then fiverr will be able to protect you.

I would also recommend to watch free course on fiverr learn on how fiverr works how to be a successful seller

Hello. This same thing happened with me also. My client (she was from ***********) requested me to design a letterhead for her & she will place order after 2 days as she has no money in her wallet. So I did it but no order or any $ from that cheater women. DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO !!!

Hi. That’s very unfortunate, but Fiverr warns sellers against working without any existing order. If you do it, it’s a risk you take and that’s on you. Even if you do that for a regular customer you trust, it would still be a risk that’s on you if you take it, they might have a car crash before they get around to paying, or a bug with their payment source that never gets solved, or something.

You can report her to support, and support might act as they see fit, I’d say if they review her account and see a pattern there, it might get banned, but you won’t get compensated for work that you did without an existing order.

On another note, it’s against forum guidelines to mention countries in such context, for easily understandable reasons if one ponders it, so if you don’t edit your post accordingly, expect the moderators editing it for you.

Yes. You got taken by the oldest con in the Fiverr Universe: dangle a carrot in front of a new or desperate seller - but, have a “test” they have to pass, by asking for a demo or sample of the work the scammer wants done. Once you deliver that work, you are SOL. You fell for the FOMO of an order, and the scammer knew that at least one seller he wrote and asked for a demo from would.

I agreed but he requested for a demo version and said after he is satisfied that it is working he will place the order

NEVER give a demo version on the basis that if they like it, they will order. 99.9999% of the time, they disappear with your hard work and never order. Charge $5 for a demo if you have to, but do not do it for free.

But he never paid for offer

He doesn’t have to. You did not have an order with him.

Is there any way to complaint about him ?

No. You are in charge of your business here. Fiverr is not going to chase after this scammer to demand they pay you for your work. Fiverr would probably just advise you to not do work unless you have an order with the person first in the future.

Hard lesson, but, many new sellers go through it.

I had something almost similar happening to me about a month ago when I had yet to receive an order. I have gigs on creative writing and one buyer approached me with a proposal for a 1000 word writing project but he said that he would need the first 300 words written for free first as a “sample”. I stood my ground and told him that there would have to be some kind of minimum payment, $5 at least, for such a large chunk of work. He did not bother talking to me after that. I know how hard it can be to snag a few projects for a new seller but you need to stand your ground and remain patient in your dealings or scammers will get an opportunity to exploit you

He wanted a bot that can give votes to his crypto currency bypassing re CAPTCHA and other things…

I provided him with a bot that does the work (but being demo version I didn’t include feature like multiple votes it vote for one time only) ,

Maybe he could use it as it was by calling it repeatedly. Maybe if you wanted to show something before the order you could have shown a video of of it working for proof instead of giving him the actual bot (even if it was a demo version) since they might still be able to use the demo version.

Though making it give multiple votes for his crypto currency sounds like it would be unethical to create. Isn’t it doing something like cheating in some vote thing that’s supposed to be answered by humans (maybe it would be fraudulent votes?)? So it might have been something that might not have been allowed anyway.

He was never your customer, he was maybe a potential buyer. Only consider a buyer your customer when the order is officially placed.

And sorry but I do not see any option here but to move on and learn from this.

Thanks for your suggestions and advices !
From next time I’ll take care of these things !
Don’t know why people do that , few $ will not make me Rich and will not make them poor !
But they will definately regret these things at some moment of life when someone will repeat same things with them .
