I would like to know, how are the ways I can change my voice up, to get different sounding characters? I can sing, but I want to try voice overs, but I cannot change my voice to sound like a different person.

This is a real skill and something taught in acting school. You can do a bit of “lazy” stuff with pitch shifters (Goa’uld), ring modulators (Dalek), vocoders ('real" Cylons) and the like but if you can’t change your ‘character’ then it falls flat pretty fast.

So… the advice is to “become” the person you are playing. This will see you alter your presentation to suit. The more you can understand the character (motivations etc), the more you can deliver differently.

It takes time and practice. Walk around being SpongeBob or Winston Churchill.

You don’t have to drastically change your voice to become a voice actor. A lot of newcomers think that being a voice actor means having an array of different voices - while in reality it’s more important to know how to act and enunciate properly and just play around with your vocal colors.

Very true! I’ll second that. As a voice over artist, I’m not terribly proficient in character voices at all. In fact, I don’t even offer them on Fiverr right now. But, I’m still able to work full time on the platform. There’s plenty of commercial work, audiobooks, eLearning gigs, etc. that can take up your time in the booth.

I’d love to do long narration (audiobooks, etc), but I still need to learn how to post-edit and have the proper room treatment. Also, since I have to turn off my air-conditioner for recording, it would be a sauna by the end of it, lol. 😂

Much of what you see online about wall padding and mics etc is total BS. What matters is the Selling Power of the Story - and of course the audience. No point making cute-bunny slasher-epics for 13 yo girls.

A properly set up SM58 style mic like a Behringer XM8500 in a room with enough soft furnishing to stop it sounding like a shiny ballroom will do a fine job. The fancier the mic, the harder you make it for yourself. Same with mics on phones.

Post editing is not necessarily your job. And if your client thinks it is then charge them for it and pass it on as it is not for the feint of heart, or the lazy - no manner how much the software sellers promise. Roll that price in or remind the buyer that you are Voice Talent (therefore not a specialist mix tech) and let them hire some cheap idiot and die with it after your work got massacred.

Yes, the air con will have to be off, and the dog, and the thing people almost always tap against the mic stand (which they should never touch). Make sure you have an easy way to read scripts and turn pages when NOT Speaking. Don’t forget a quiet chair. Squeaks, creaks and bangs in voiced don’t magically go away.

Today it probably is because they are more interested in penny pinching (and destroying quality along with it). Ask Sir David Attenborough or Richard Burton how much audio post he does…

Because a thing is does not mean it is the best way. Would a slave defend slavery? Actually many did because at least they knew where the next meal was coming from 😉

Hey everybody! How’s it going? Hope you’re doing great! As I found this new thread, I’d like to introduce myself and hopefully, collaborate with some of you in the near future!

I’m Marco, a professional bassist, bass instructor, and music producer coming all the way from Argentina. I’ve worked on several projects from a lot of genres, from Jazz to Extreme Metal, but my area of expertise is Rock, Metal and Pop music.

I have work with major acts here in Argentina such as Leon Gieco and Victor Heredia (Two living legends in the Argentinian’s music industry), as well as a lot of other artists. I’m finding on Fiverr an oportunity to expand my services and reach people all around the world. I always aim to deliver the most professional work I can do and luckily, I’m doing quite while here, specially in the last four months where I started to pay more attention to the Fiverr world.

I am a proofreader. My husband, Rob, who is also a retired English teacher, helps me out when I get more work than I can handle on Fiverr. Rob is a classic rock drummer from way back–he started as a teen in the late 60’s. He reads music, which most local drummers can not do, and he plays music from all genres. That is him with me in my profile image.

Until recently Rob owned a drum store. Currently, he gives drum lessons and sells drums from his lifetime of collecting drums, trap sets and related equipment on eBay.

While he owned the drum store, Rob sponsored drum clinics featuring well known drummers who have become friends.

I have nudged Rob to create gigs on Fiverr, but we are not sure of what he could do without having production equipment or even which equipment he would need and how costly it would be. Maybe giving lessons on Fiverr would work but we are not sure of what equipment he would need for that either.

Personally I found it not worthwhile to purchase things to use for Fiverr gigs. It’s so risky because you can’t know if you’ll even break even on a purchase for it, let alone profit!

I agree. But I did get a new computer this summer. In the winter the air is so dry that every time I would touch the keyboard the computer would shut down, which must have caused some heat as the keyboard became warped!

Hello everyone!
I have been on the Fiverr platform for a little while now but have just discovered this forum.
I come from a singer/actor background, performing around the US but based in Chicago. I love doing voiceover work and would like to do more of it these days, so I am expanding my opportunities to Fiverr.
If anyone has any tips on getting started hooking clients, I would love to hear them.

I have started with music since I was a little kid.

I played the oboe since I was 5 years old and really quickly dove into the world of classical music and can’t imagine my life without it now.
I’ve played concerts with symphonic orchestras in Germany and started to compose my own music when I was about 15 years old because I ALWAYS had some melodies stuck in my head that I just had to write down!

And now I’m studying musical theatre because I also love singing and dancing whilst still composing a lot of music for my friends and/or colleagues and myself of course.

I’m George and I have 40+ years of experience in Media.

I have spent 20+ years in Broadcasting (DJ, news reporter, morning show host, advertising sales, advertising voice over and production, advertising script writing, music director, janitor, transmitter level reader, coffee maker, etc.) and ended that career as the Assistant Manager of the radio station in the community I have settled in, in Southern British Columbia, Canada.

My second career started in 2000 when I was hired as the Advertising Sales Manager for a small local weekly newspaper. That involved all aspects of print advertising including graphic design, etc. In 2004, I bought the paper and became the President/Publisher/Owner. That included all the activities you would expect of a business owner plus all editorial duties. I also took a lot of photos for the paper. My wife assisted with all the clerical work.

I started my third career quite by accident. In 2014, when things were getting hard for the newspaper, I turned to the internet looking for some way to generate some extra income. I eventually came upon the idea of doing some freelance writing on the side. Since I was already doing this in my business, why not have some fun writing blogs for other people online?

I found a lot of success doing that an became a full-time freelance writer in 2016. We ended up closing the newspaper business down shortly before that.

I’ve been freelancing since.

Other stuff about me: I’m heavily involved in my local community as a volunteer. I’ve been either the President or Vice President of many of the non-profits that operate in our community. In 2016 I was honoured by the Rotary Club with a Paul Harris Fellowship - the highest honour Rotary issues to members or community leaders.

As if I’m not busy enough, in October 2018 I was elected to our local Town Council and am currently serving a 4-year term as a local civic politician.

That should be enough of an intro on me.

I currently have 7 titles (e-Books) that I sell at a popular online e-Book platform.

I have also self-published a volume of poetry of mine.

I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting.

My profile at another business-oriented social network listed all of my work.

I self-published a number of booklets related to local history.

I think I’ve completed a total of 16 titles including the e-Books.

As you can tell, I don’t really keep track of it…lol

I finally was able to start music at 14 (after working really hard, my special needs have been compensated for), but something didn’t click as I tried to do more pop-based genres. Fortunately, some videos reintroduced me to classical music, and I have made some surprising progress. I am at RCM Level 8 after 4 years (including starting at 14), and I am working on Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude as of now.

My pa was Guild Hall London major in Organist & Choirmaster and second in Harpsichord (common as piano playing action was a liability with on/off action of pipe organs. I grew up in a house with Baroque music on organ and harpsichord. He also built harpsichords for sale.

Like you, he had no feel for Rock. We could get him to play Beatles tunes but he felt unconnected with them. Just as I feel very unconnected with many modern forms of music, to me they have no Story (narrative content).

That’s really cool. You obviously love the written word and actually make a living from it. That’s a win win 🙂

I like history that’s close to home too, it’s great hearing about the major events, but I love the normal day to day stories of the people that lived where I live. What their lives were like etc.

That’s a lovely story Elliclaire. I’m not a lover of classical music, but I can appreciate the level of skill needed to write it let alone play it. Congrats on your achievements so far and best of luck on your musical and Fiverr journeys.
