Problem with a writing gig?

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to the Fiverr world and I’m working as a writer and translator, mostly focused on health and medicine.

I received a fairly odd request a couple of days ago, and I’m not sure how to proceed.

The buyer placed an order without first contacting me, and the requirements are for me to write an essay about the implications of alcohol and substance abuse.
The fishy part is that this essay will have to be given to the court as they got into trouble, being involved in underage drinking!!
I asked them if they are allowed to ask for help for this assignment, and they guaranteed that it’s not a problem.
I’ve already contacted Fiverr CS and I’m waiting for them to advise me on this, what do you think?

I’d reject it as matter of ethics. It sounds like a punishment, and there are no lessons learned by having someone else do the research and writing.

I’m not sure CS would cancel this for you, as it doesn’t nicely fall under ‘academic’ work, but it’s close enough that you might have a legit case and standing of your own.

You need to remove the reference to essays from your gig.

Helping with academic work is a violation of the Terms of Service at the bottom of the Fiverr main page.

Make sure to carefully read the Terms of Service as you are risking your account.

I think most sellers simply do the work and avoid asking too many questions. For example, if I was an essay writer how do I know that essay isn’t for a blog or some legitimate purpose?

And how did you know the essay has to be given to the court? Did the client tell you that? Or are you assuming?

That’s why I don’t ask too many questions. I want plausible deniability. Someone wants me to write a Facebook ad, I don’t want to know if it’s for class or school, if the product is legal or not. I will assume it is, and Fiverr has never troubled me over it.

Update on the situation: CS suggested not to complete the order. They also canceled it. It was a shady one indeed! Let’s hope that the “contact me before placing an order” will work from now on 😄
