Suspicious buyer request for selfie

A buyer just inboxed me with an unrelated gig (probably a gig that is closest to her Budget?) asking me for a selfie while holding up a sign. Says that it’s for a prank.

Is this safe? Can I trust this buyer? She then asked me for a photo of myself because I said that we don’t look alike for my selfie to pass as hers.

Anyone encountered this before

I had a recent prospective buyer that wanted me to send them a short recording of my voice explaining something about myself. They wanted the recording because so many of the sellers they have encountered said they were from the US and spoke perfect English, however, once this buyer booked a job with such sellers they discovered their English skills were not the of the quality they professed to have.

I said said, Nope, and blocked them.

I worked on a crowdsourcing marketplace and i remember someone was offering $5 to 50 different workers for selfies for an art project. The only requirement was that they open their mouth like they were in shock. They then photoshopped banana going into their mouths.

Never fall for the Tricksters tricks.

For future reference, the next time somebody asks for a selfie.

Send them this :point_down:t4: and Block!

The perfect mug to add to their collection. 😈

Who knows what they will do with your photo or where it would end up.
Pranks could go viral for the right and wrong reasons, too.

Do you think I should report that buyer to Fiverr for them to check that profile out?

That’s terrible.

Hmm. The buyer’s request in your situation sounded like a legit request but it’s tough to tell them apart.

It may have been a legit request but I’m with Vickie. There are an awful lot of people stealing other sellers’ profile info, portfolio, even audio, video and whatnot, and using all that to fake being someone else, I’ve seen my and other sellers’ profiles cloned on another platform, I’ve seen people stealing and using my profile info even on Fiverr itself, I certainly don’t need people doing whatever with a video I handed them myself (by the way, @vickiespencer, did they offer to buy a gig to pay you for the time and effort to record that video? …).

It’s a pretty tall order to expect an established seller on a platform to record and hand over a video (which could be abused extremely easily, on top of that) to prove that they are who they are.

It’s a pity if the buyer had a bad experience, understandable too that they don’t want to repeat that, however, that’s asking too much and all buyers who feel they can’t trust the profiles on a platform should approach the platform and demand they verify their users (oh, and how about buyers provide their PayPal and credit card records from the last year, while they are there to reciprocate and prove they don’t do charge backs) and add some kind of verified checkmark to profiles of sellers they did verify.

I for one certainly won’t send anyone a video of myself to prove I am who I say I am, on top of it saying something they tell me to say, no way.

If you need more proof than profile, portfolio and reviews provide, order a cheap test gig and have it checked by someone you trust, or ask Fiverr to verify me, but you’re not the police, you won’t get anything from me but the publicly available info from my profile and whatever you ordered from me, provided it’s something I offer in my gigs.

They said they wanted to book a gig if I could prove I was not from a certain area of the world. Oddly enough their profile was from another area of the world I was once accused of being from by a buyer seeking to cheat me out of my work.

a cheap test gig

I offered that, but they insisted on the voice recording.

Maybe so, maybe not.

However, we messaged back and forth for quite a long time. They did not ask me for the voice recording immediately.

I felt like I was being led down some sort of path 👣 the prospective buyer wanted me to get to.

When I get negative vibes

Yeah, it wouldn’t hurt. Trust & Safety could take a gander at the user’s interactions and decide from there what to do. Remember, it is your prerogative to accept or reject demands.

That combined with @nikavoice 's picture of Billy. I’m not getting much sleep tonight.

LOL, oops my bad! Maybe you’ll have a peaceful slumber tonight. 😴
