You should always talk about rights to use your work on your portfólio before starting the work. There are times you the client might ask to not post soon because the project requires it. But even then, you should discuss about when you’ll be able to post it, even if you have to wait months or years.

For your situation, if the client really insists in you removing it, you should, but make sure he knows its your work and you have rights to put in your portfólio at least, even if not right now.
