The Easiest Way that Fiverr Could Double it's Earnings - But Doesn't

At the moment, I have a backlog of orders due to revisions on video work which by rights I should be charging for.

Someone orders a basic video with no customization. Then they reject their delivery because they want all scene colors changed to match their branding. Then there are the friendly real estate people whom I make a video for only for them to suddenly go and change their listing price.

It goes on and on. The thing is, it shouldn’t. If a gig says no revisions or one revision, a buyer shouldn’t be allowed to repeatedly push the revision button. They should instead get a nice big, “Hey you! Stop killing our freelancers by virtue of mental exhaustion!” pop-up with a notification that they have used all their reviews and now need to pay if they want more.

It would be that simple. Fiverr would make loads of extra money and wouldn’t have to commit to a single brand identity somersault. Even better, if this happens, I might live to be 35! - Now wouldn’t that be awesome?

I like your idea. They have that announcement in the requirements section that mentions that changes to the order are not allowed. Of course that is probably not even read.

You could make your own “pop up” with simply a big red .gif file you send them saying

HEY YOU HAVE USED UP ALL THE ALLOWED REVISIONS SO REQUEST A CUSTOM ORDER IF YOU NEED MORE.

I would do that and send it automatically when they go over the limit.

Thanks for this @misscrystal, it gives me a great idea I hadn’t thought of before! 💐

I’d do that, too, but I’m wary about buyers who may go full-rage-mode and start screaming that I’m ripping them off or trying to extort or blackmail them 🤯

How would you deal with those?

If Fiverr had an actual mechanism in place counting down the revisions left and then warning them before they press the button that they will be charged for if they used them all up, it would be a much different story.

Right now buyers get angry because they get messages from us, telling them that we need more $$, BUT they can clearly see that Fiverr allows them to press the button as much as they want.

Hence their feeling that we are taking them for a ride.

If Fiverr actually backs it up, I think buyers will take a while to adjust but then comply.

It’s the same as wetransfer files. When they get a file from their freelancer, they get a warning that the file will expire in 7 days.

So what do they do when the link expires? They don’t blame the freelancer, they apologize and request a new delivery.

And the next time they get a wetransfer delivery, they save the file in 4 different locations and then back it up online as well to make sure. 🙂

If it says that the number of revisions is X in the gig description and that they have used X number of revisions on the .gif that pops up, then they can scream all they want.

If you run into these unreasonable types often then you can put in the place where your have your requirements in caps that the number of revisions is X.

You know what this reminds me of? Playing music in clubs and I’ll tell you why: The club owner has met you, listened to your stuff, watched you perform and ultimately hired you. Then…right within the first few songs, they’ll come over and say.

"Can you turn down."
Or
"Can you play this kind of music or that…"
Totally ruining the feeling of your performance.

Normally I do this: Look over the mixing board as though I’m adjusting something and say into the mic “You’re right this sounds way better.”

They NEVER notice the difference.

This is the problem, though, far too many buyers are just plain unreasonable. With a gig on the go at the moment, the buyer paid for a basic video with no branding or customization. Stupidly, however, I branded the work anyway since I am trying to build reviews and I had the time.

Now the problem is that the buyer is asking me to change a shade of blue which I have used to one which directly matches their logo. The problem is, the shade of blue used is an exact match already, there is just a transparency effect (which the buyer still wants) but doesn’t get that the color shade as it exists already, can’t be perfectly matched to their requirements if they want the transparency also.

I’m getting paid $24 for an order which has now drawn out for over 6-days into a purely insane dialogue about an issue which doesn’t exist.

There was one revision on this order. This was completed within an hour. If the buyer had not been allowed to request a further revision without paying, this problem wouldn’t have ever come about in the first place. As it is, I’m probably just going to cancel this as if there is one thing I hate more than being paid buttons for work, it is having to appease people like this.

This is very much needed!

I never understood why we have to select “number of included revisions” or “revision costs extra” if a buyer can request as many as they want regardless of our settings.

Another (related) problem:
I often have buyers who request a revision when all they really want to do is ask a question.

I usually deliver again with my response and then they’ll continuously request revisions (sometimes up to the full three days later) with more questions for me.

I think next to the “request a revision” button there should be a new button for “ask a question” because the tiny little “click here to contact seller” line isn’t an obvious enough alternative.

This is up to you as a seller to handle this. If you say no revisions or three revisions, you develop a system to deal with it.

Just because they ask for a revision, doesn’t mean they get it free. That’s up to you.

Right after they send the revision request, I send them a “Sure, no problem. Here’s the gig extra for the revision.”

Fiverr isn’t going to set up an automatic system to count down revision requests.

Some revisions are legit, even in my case where I don’t do free revisions. I might miss a word, or say “Slide” when the script says “Side” or some other error.

IF I offered revisions, I wouldn’t count my mistakes as one of the buyers revisions. That’s not fair either.

YOU have to develop a system to handle this. There is no perfect system, and it will vary among the categories. Once they know there will be a $5 charge for a revisions, half the people drop the request.

Also: Offering unlimited revisions is just plain asking for trouble. Someday you’ll get slammed with a buyer who takes advantage and if you say unlimited, they can keep asking. (That comment is NOT directed at you, but to anybody new who thinks offering unlimited revisions is going to convince buyers that you are worth it…)
