Commercial rights over copyrights

Hello,

A lot has been said about the issue of commercial rights vs copyright on the forum. But no-one has asked the question: as a company/business, why would you be interested in owning the copyright at all? If you have the commercial rights, meaning the right to sell, reproduce and use for commercial purposes, exclusively and in perpetuity, then why would owning the original copyright be important? what does owning the copyright allow the artist to do, apart from being able to prove that he or she is the original maker of the product? being able to show that you are the original creator of the product through owning the original copyright, does nothing to stop the company which owns the commercial rights from being able to to what they do and hence poses no threat to that company, right?
