Scared to change subcatagory

Here is the current title of my gig: "I will record music, parodies, jingles, radio beds, songs for $5"

http://fiverr.com/ceneworksmedia/record-your-music

I have been getting a steady flow of orders, but I work with a partner and I just recently noticed that we have been under the “jingles” category this whole time. Generally though, our orders are of full songs that people have written (or of lyrics that we must write a melody to, etc.). This made me wonder if we would get more traffic in the “Custom Songs” category. However, since we are already getting pretty good traffic through Jingles, I’m scared to switch.

Any suggestions?

Err, don’t know if this is technically allowed or not but why not create a new gig (with different / adjusted description, tags, images, video etc.) and post it to the Custom Songs category? That way you can test and see which performs better. Again, don’t know if that’s ok or technically allowed or not. I’ve seen others do it. Heck, I’ve even seen some sellers post almost the exact same gig in the SAME category without any penalty. So on the surface it seems to be allowed but I know that’s not saying much.

I considered switching subcategories for one of my gigs just after the launch of V2. The problem was that I didn’t want to wait however long it might take for the gig to be reindexed and begin showing up in the new subcategory. I’m guessing that’s what you’re concerned about too?

Unless anyone else has more info about how long it takes for gigs to be indexed or reindexed and unless someone has a better solution, I can only recommend creating a brand new gig based on the same service. Just be sure to use different images and content in your description. Also create a brand new video rather than using the same one from the current gig. I shouldn’t think that would violate any rules or terms so long as you’re not spamming every single relevant category.

Hey @ceneworksmedia! We had a similar situation when we first created our jingle gig. The difference is that our gig was for jingles, but we set it up under the custom song section to start! We decided to move the gig to the jingles category, as it made more sense for what we were offering. Our traffic tripled. Now that may be because more of our specific clientele was viewing the jingle section and we were not visible to our niche customer in the custom songs category, or it could have been because no one even went to the custom songs section…I would start by checking out the other gigs in that section and see what type of volume they appear to be doing compared to the jingle section.

We have actually been meaning to create a whole separate gig for custom songs, in addition to our current jingle gig marketed towards businesses. There is not an issue with having these similar type gigs, as they cater to different markets.

We also have a voiceover gig and intend on creating a separate gig just for voicemail and answering service jobs. Essentially the same thing, but they cater to specific markets based on the category.

What I wouldn’t do, is create the same gig and place it in categories that it does not fit into or put two of the same gig within the same category. I believe this may be against the TOS and is rather unprofessional for obvious reasons anyway.

Anyhow, whichever route you decide to go, good luck!

I agree, and just so you guys know this is not what I was suggesting. I merely used it as an example to show what other sellers have done (as a way of exploring whether Fiverr penalizes those actions or not). I fully recommend that if you're going to create another gig for a different subcategory, that it be different from the original gig in several ways so that you're not spamming multiple categories.

This is a very good idea, a great way to do a bit of market research before you make any changes. So definitely go with this advice from @jive_a_five first. Then you'll have some idea of whether it makes more sense to move your gig to the other category or develop a different but similar gig instead.
