4USD = 6 kgs of rice that is like two weeks worth of rice for my family…

(India)

I can have a basic pizza at the nearby Domino’s Pizza for a Gig. Or order a meal from Faasos perhaps, but that would cost slightly more. Have two cups of coffee - Cappuccino - at the Indian version of Starbucks, Cafe Coffee Day, close to my house.

Australia isn’t budget friendly, for $4 I could get almost a 600ml bottle of coke from 7-11 (usually $4.50 unless on special), 1 dozen eggs, 1 loaf of decent bread, 2 & 1/2 litres of petrol, 1/2 a craft beer at a pub, almost a basic dominos pizza, a coffee (at some places, most places are closer to $5 these days) 1 gig pays for 1% of my weekly rent…

Interesting topic, that I would like to hear different stories from sellers/buyers around the world. Where do you come from? What can be done with $5 in your country?

In Macedonia, you can go to a pub and drink 2-3 beers. You can have a “nice” dinner at a restaurant that is not too pricey. You can buy a few groceries for the day. But it’s not enough money, definitely to spend the day with.

Note: I live in the capitol city, so it’s a bit pricier than the other cities. Usually in the smaller cities you can do a lot more for $5.

Good that you initiated this 🙂

In India, $4 = ₹260

You can buy the following things (and a few more, that I may miss) with that money:

  • 50 Eggs (I do not eat organic eggs - can’t digest the high quality and the price)
  • 8 Kilos of Wheat Flour
  • 6 Litters of Milk
  • 6 Kilos of Medium quality Rice
  • 6 Water Bubbles (for those who do not have Water Purifier at home)
  • 4 Kilos Banana (the small & costly ones - inorganic)
  • 3 Kilos of Nagpur Oranges
  • 2 Bottles of Beer (Kingfisher I love)
  • 2 Kilos of Chicken Meat
  • 1.5 Kilos of Shimla Apples
  • A full and a half bottle of Old Monk (the finest Rum in the world 😛)
  • 1.25 Kilo of Pork
  • 1 pack of King Cigarettes (I quit on Jan 1st, I guess prices have increased slightly recently)
  • Watch a movie alone & no Popcorn
  • A heavy lunch in a medium sized restaurant
  • A regular Pizza from Dominos
  • A month of Mobile Internet Data (28 Days)
  • 1/2 of a monthly Bus Pass (I guess)
  • 1/2 month’s Digital TV subscription
  • 10 Days Electricity Bill
  • 1 week of Broadband Internet (So, you see I need to sell at least 4 Gigs a month to carry on working here, even if I do not eat, smoke or drink 😔)
  • 1/2 Week’s perishable vegetables

**Prices are as in Bangalore Rural Area. Use OR & not AND while reading the list.

Request Bangaloreans to add if I missed anything 🙂

Hope this adds to the cause! While filling this up, I realized that everyone should actually do this exercise. Along with fun, you will also have a rough idea on how many sales you need to make minimum, a month & work towards that target!

💡 Just for Fun

4USD in my state = Ordering off Dollar Menu of McDonalds plus tax

Other things:
3 boxes of movie theater candy from Walmart or 6 snack size bags of chips
1 12-pack name brand soda pop or 2 12-pack store brand soda pop
At least 3 items from the Dollar Tree
3 cups of coffee from Subway
A loaf of bread and lunch meat from grocery
1-2 gallons of gas
4 $1 lottery tickets or 2 $2 lottery tickets
2 ice creams from the ice cream truck
3 spicy pickles from the corner store
1 bus ride downtown; transfer fees included
3 cheap drawing pads from local art store

Of course the above isn’t factoring in coupons but when in use, you could possibly get more for your bucks.

Wow, that’s so inexpensive. In my country parking tickets cost 150Euro (9000 MKD) ($170) and other tickets for breaking the traffic rules are up to 300 Euro (18000 MKD)

3 cop tickets part is for two wheeler offence. For four wheeler, it can be 10$ or even 15$.

My Country: India

I can purchase/do any one of the below:

  1. a simple tees
  2. can get recharge your data pack
  3. a ticket to somewhere near and yet i have never gone, just me in a bus

Where from India? In India prices vary widely. Prices in Bangalore are very different from Nagpur or Ludhiana, for example. [update : Ok - my place of birth actually :)]

In my first 2 years I did not get many clients from India, but last year or so, getting many orders from India. Indians have taken to online business in a big way, so after US clients, I expect to get most of my work from Indian clients.

For the $4 from one gig: two small bottles of water. Or a couple of small hamburgers at McDonalds. A bottle of katsup and of mustard in the grocery store, or a half gallon of non organic milk. 12 non organic eggs.

1.5 gallons of gasoline (petrol).

I buy organic milk and eggs to avoid the chemicals and pharmaceuticals in those products and they cost twice as much as regular non organic ones.

That is awesome. I was reading through the previous posts wondering if they were organic. You know cage free, hand fed. 🙂

I can get eggs at the dollar general for $1.50. But I am picking up my order of fresh eggs this afternoon for $6.00 a dozen.

I asked a clerk at the grocery store where the cagefree, hand fed eggs were and he looked for 10 minutes.

I then told him that I hoped they used groves when they hand feed those chickens. They could really be painful. Were they organic glooves?
